Indonesian cleric may face terrorism trial within weeks
Indonesian Islamic cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, could go on trial on terrorism charges as
early as next month.
A spokesman for the attorney general's office says police handed over the files on
Bashir last week and it will take two weeks to determine whether there's enough
supporting evidence.
Once satisfied, prosecutors will hand over the files to a court which will appoint a
panel of judges to hear the case and set a trial date.
Police say they have new evidence that Bashir led the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah
Islamiyah terrorist network, which is blamed for a series of bombings that have rocked
Indonesia since 1999.
