Five years jail for Indonesian terrorist plotter
An Indonesian Islamic militant convicted of involvement in a terror plot against
Western interests has been jailed for five years.
Judge Syaifuddin said Ahmad Sofyan, alias Tamim, was guilty of taking part in a
"sinister conspiracy" to launch attacks by attending several meetings of the Jemaah
Islamiyah (JI) network in early 2003.
However, the Judge says the main charge of engaging in acts of terrorism could not
be proved.
The sentence was much lighter than the 15 years recommended by prosecutors.
The judges said Sofyan was a member of a JI team in charge of making bombs but
the team had not launched any attacks.
Sofyan, who also led the Jakarta branch of JI's military wing, was arrested after the
suicide bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta last August which killed 12 people.
