Indonesia leading the world in justice for terrorists: president
Indonesia's president, Megawati Sukarnoputri, says Indonesia has the best record in
the world for bringing terrorists to justice.
She has told 300 prosecutors at a ceremony in the capital, Jakarta, that Indonesia
was the first country in the world to be consistent and determined in combating
terrorism.
President Megawati says that while many countries use the war on terror merely as a
slogan, Indonesia has taken perpetrators to court based on legal norms and judicial
processes.
Indonesia has put on trial dozens of militants over several attacks, including the
October 2002 Bali bombings, and the blast at Jakarta's Marriott Hotel last August.
More than 30 people have been convicted for the Bali attacks alone - more terror
convictions than any other country so far.
President Megawati says prosecutors should take credit for Indonesia's success in
efforts to combat militants.
