Foreigners leave Indonesian mine after terror warning
Foreigners working at the giant Inco nickel project in Indonesia's South Sulawesi
province, have begun evacuating after warnings of a possible terrorist attack against
Western interests there.
Our Indonesia correspondent, Tim Palmer, says Australians are among those leaving
the area, acting on advice from the Australian and Canadian embassies.
The Australian Embassy in Jakarta has confirmed that four Australians working at the
Canadian-owned Inco mine and smelter, are to leave immediately, with three
Australians remaining at the site.
Indonesia's Metro TV has reported that 58 Canadians are also leaving the Saroako
region around the mine after Canada's Embassy joined Australia in warning of
intelligence of a credible threat against Westerners there.
The Inco mine has in the past been the target of violent confrontations with local land
rights and environmental activists but a security source in the area says there are
some indications the current threat could come from Islamic extremists.
