Indonesian judge says Bali bombers will stay in jail
The head of Indonesia's top court says convictions against the Bali bombers still
stand despite a ruling that the law on which the verdicts were based is
unconstitutional.
Chief judge Jimly Asshidiqie says the Constitutional Court ruling does not apply
retroactively.
He was responsing to a question about the implication of the court's ruling on the Bali
convictions.
Judge Asshidiqie is the chief of a nine-member panel of judges which ruled Friday that
a retroactive provision in an anti-terror law violated the constitution.
The ruling followed an appeal by a man jailed for 15 years for helping the bombers.
His lawyers claimed a subsidiary law which made the main anti-terror law retroactive
breaches the constitution.
Lawyers for the Bali bombers say the ruling provides new grounds for appeals.
The nightclub bombings killed 202 people in October 2002.
