Prosecutors' surprise move in Bali bomb trial
Indonesian prosecutors have asked a Jakarta court to sentence one of the alleged
senior leaders of the Bali bomb plot to only 10 years in prison.
Our Indonesia correspondent, Tim Palmer says, Idris is due to be sentenced within
weeks.
According to the indictment Idris had one of the most wide-ranging and central roles in
the Bali bomb conspiracy.
He attended most of the key planning meetings, secured cars and safe houses,
helped select the targets, recieved the explosives, taught a suicide bomber to drive
the car bomb and detonated the third bomb aimed at the US consulate.
Despite the allegations, prosecutors today told the court Idris should recieve just 10
years jail for that crime and for his involvement in the Marriot bombing last year.
The judges have the option to pass a heavier or lighter sentence.
Tuesday's hearing was the first to proceed since last week's constitutional court ruling
struck out a law under which Idris is charged and defence lawyers say they may raise
that issue at the next sitting.
