Pressure increases on terror research group in Indonesia
Indonesia's intelligence chief has increased pressure on the research organisation,
International Crisis Group (ICG), saying action should be taken against groups
disturbing the Government and people of Indonesia.
Our Indonesia correspondent, Tim Palmer, says moves to expel the organisation's
director in Jakarta, Sidney Jones, have raised fears of a crackdown by the Indonesian
Government on human rights and other non-government groups.
Indonesia's state intelligence agency boss, Hendropriyono, says the government
could, if it wanted to, exercise, what he terms, old measures against outspoken
organisations like the international crisis group.
But he says the government has chosen not to.
Stiill, he says actions should be taken against the terrorism research expert Sidney
Jones, saying there is no reason she should be allowed to stay in Indonesia.
Two days ago the international crisis group confirmed Ms Jones work visa had not
been renewed, saying her expulsion would reflect poorly on Indonesia.
Among other projects, the ICG is considered to have compiled the most respected
body of work on terrorism in South East Asia.
Indonesia's intelligence chief has warned action would also be taken against other
groups and individuals that he accuses of selling out the country.
