Indonesia to drop Bali bomb allegations against terror suspect
Bashir
Indonesian police say top Indonesian terror suspect Abu Bakar Bashir will no longer
face charges of involvement in the Bali bombings following a landmark legal ruling last
week.
But the Islamic cleric will still be charged under an anti terror law which authorises the
death penalty.
National detective chief Suyitno Landung says police will delete accusations related
to the October 2002 Bali attack when preparing an evidence file in preparation for a
trial.
The Constitutional Court last Friday ruled that the retroactive use of the 2003 anti
terror law to cover the Bali bombings was unconstitutional.
But Mr Landung says Bashir oversaw a ceremony at a Jemaah Islamiah training camp
in the southern Philippines in 2000 in his capacity as "emir" or leader.
He says there are also six monthly reports addressed to Bashir from the camp and
Bashir is linked to other JI attacks.
