Ambon - Assistance to People Affected by Sectarian Violence
Geneva, 18 June, 2004
On 25 April 2004 fresh sectarian violence broke out in Ambon, the Maluku provincial
capital. This was the worst violence since an agreement in February 2002 ended three
years of sectarian fighting in which some 5,000 persons died.
ACT member YAKKUM (Yayasan Kristen untuk Kesehatan Umum - Christian
Foundation for Public Health) Emergency Unit (YEU) reported that houses, schools
and churches were burnt down during the riots and that people fled their villages to
find a safe place.
YEU's local partners are implementing emergency responses as follows:
Parakletos - is assisting 819 displaced households (almost 4,000 people). Cooking
utensils were provided to 543 households, while staple food and mats went to 607
households.

city have been reopened. However, shoot-outs and bombs blasts continue to create
tension.
