THE SITUATION IN AMBON/MOLUCCAS – Report No. 441
1. NO END TO FRICTION - Minor events can cause major unrest in Ambon
nowadays. In the early evening of last Thursday, May 27, there happened a traffic
accident in the Pardais Tengah neighbourhood, Ambon city. Police came to the spot
with six armored vehicles in order to prevent two mutually opposing community groups
from attacking each other.
Police forces also took up positions in A.M. Sangadji Street and Diponegoro Street to
prevent heated people of different communities leaving their respective residential
areas. Residents were persuaded not to be provoked, to stay home and leave the
whole matter to the police.
2. BOMBS AND TERRORISTS - In the evening of May 27, the police arrested in the
large village of Passo, to the East of Ambon city, a man by the name of Fredik
Tulaseka (27) who confessed having placed a bomb at a bus terminal in Passo. This
bomb had successfully been defused by the police. Any relation between the suspect
and the recent bombing terrors in Ambon is still unclear.
Last Friday, May 28, the police defused a bomb planted in front of a house in Lorong
PMI, neighbourhood of Kudamati. The bomb had been placed at a distance of only 25
meters from Alex Manuputty's house.
The total of recently placed bombs is ten, most of which could be defused in time by
police experts. Finding the terrorist(s) is one of the priorities of the police in Ambon
now.
3. At the request of the Ambon Mayor, the Japanese government has provided US$
48,211.00 to help transport relief supplies for internally displaced people in Ambon.
