Police arrest six Jakarta UN building bombers
SEMARANG (JP): Officers from the National Police and Central Java Provincial Police
captured on Wednesday six people suspected of bombing the Jakarta UN building in
April 2003, National Police chief Da'i Bachtiar confirmed on Thursday.
"There are a lot of people in the terror networks and we have been after them since the
Bali and JW Marriott Hotel bombings," he added.
The six, identified as Adam, Beso, Mustakim, Widadi, Widi and Yunus, were
captured in Kenteng village, Ngadirejo district, Sukoharjo regency, at about 10:30
a.m.
Da'i also said that the police were still looking for other network members, especially
the leaders.
"Besides the UN office bombing, these six are also suspected of involvement in other
bombing plans," he said.
There were no casualties in the April 2003 attack but it prompted the UN to move its
offices to a new site.
A review of UN facilities last year said that one of the most urgent priorities was to
move the Jakarta team -- about 100 to 200 UN staff from various agencies -- out of its
building, as reported by AFP.
Jamaah Islamiyah has been blamed for the Marriott blast and for a series of other
attacks in recent years -- notably the Bali nightclub bombings in October 2002.
Some of those blamed for the Marriott blast have already been jailed, while others are
on trial. (her/nvn)
