Jamaah Islamiyah members cleared of Jakarta hotel attack but
still jailed
JAKARTA (AFP): Two alleged members of the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) terror group were
on Monday cleared by an Indonesian court of involvement in last year's Jakarta JW
Marriott hotel bombing, but were both jailed on other charges.
South Jakarta district court found that Surono, 43, did not take part in the Marriott
attack, however he had broken laws on the storing and use of explosives, judge Ida
Bagus Putu Madeg said.
Surono earlier admitted that in 2002 as head of a JI logistic team he had received and
stored a cardboard box from a fellow JI member, which turned out to contain
ammunition, firearms and bomb-making chemicals.
At another court in Jakarta, Edi Suprapto, 49, was cleared of taking part in the
Marriott bombing but sentenced for falsifying information to obtain identity papers and
a passport for another JI member.
Suprapto was also found guilty of providing another now-convicted member of the
al-Qaeda-linked regional terror group with a house, judge Caroko said.
Both men received three year sentences, falling short of the 10 years demanded by
prosecutors. Both are considering an appeal.
The Jamaah Islamiyah group is blamed for a series of deadly attacks in Indonesia and
elsewhere in recent years, including the Bali nightclub bombings which killed 202
people in October 2002. (***)
