Riot breaks out at Mojokerto Penitentiary
MOJOKERTO, East Java (JP): A riot occurred on Thursday at Mojokerto Penitentiary
in East Java after an inmate was allegedly beaten by a guard.
The incident began at about 10:30 a.m. when an inmate, identified as Rofik, was
allegedly struck by guard Akadun. The inmate was being searched by the guard
because it was suspected that he was carrying a sharp weapon beneath his shirt.
The search revealed that Rofik had a Walkman hidden under his shirt.
After the search, Akadun reportedly struck Rofik, who shouted for help, prompting
fellow inmates to chase the guard into the prison office building.
The inmates then ran amok, breaking office windows, burning mattresses and
overturning objects. Another guard, Sutoyo, was able to calm the inmates at about 11
a.m.
Thirty minutes later, however, the prisoners again began running amok through the
prison.
Mojokerto Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yovi Anesmahar said police were investigating
the incident.
However, sources said the riot was sparked by an incident on Wednesday when
Rofik's friend Roni was involved in a fight with another inmate, identified asZakaria.
Zakaria reportedly lost his cellular phone and accused Roni of stealing it, leading to
the fight.
Yovi, however, said this was unlikely the cause of the riot because inmates were not
allowed to have cell phones inside the prison. (idn/nvn)
