Supreme Court orders three alleged JI members to stay in jail
JAKARTA (AFP): Supreme Court has ordered that three suspected members of the
Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) network should remain in detention despite their acquittal on
terrorism charges by an appeal court last month, an official said Tuesday.
The ruling was issued last week pending the outcome of a counter-appeal by
prosecutors to the supreme court, said Kemas Yahya Rahman, spokesman for the
attorney-general's office.
In a trial in the provincial capital Palu in March, Hasanuddin was sentenced to three
years in jail, Firmansyah to five years and Fajri -- who was found guilty of financing JI
operations in Palu -- was given six years.
Firmansyah and Hasanuddin were convicted of withholding information on the
whereabouts of Ahmad Roichan, who was wanted by police because he had helped
hide Bali bombing suspect Mukhlas.
But the province's appeal court in May ruled there is not enough evidence to convict
the trio. Their lawyers had demanded they be freed immediately. (*)
