Maluku Update: The Completion of the Caleb House
YPM, one of Jubilee Campaign's Indonesian partner organizations, has reported that
the construction of the Caleb Chandler Memorial House is ninety-eight percent
complete. YPM expects the Caleb House, a home for orphans in the Maluku Islands
of Indonesia, to be entirely finished by the end of this month.
Hengky Hattu, Executive Director of YPM, shared the good news with us and said
those involved in the project were planning a prayer meeting and feast on July 1 to
celebrate the home's completion. "Yes, it's going to be a special thanksgiving
moment in the midst of a turmoil season. God is good," wrote Semmy Littik, a
consultant for the project, in an e-mail message to Jubilee Campaign.

We are thrilled to report that, according to the most recent correspondence with YPM,
the Caleb Chandler Memorial House (seen here in an earlier stage of construction) is
ninety-eight percent complete! The workers are nearly finished painting the ceilings
and wood frames, and placing concrete seals over the septic tanks. All windows have
been installed, and by next week, furniture such as beds and tables will moved inside.
Sand, bricks, and cement have been delivered to begin the plumbing, one of the last
major aspects of the project. The electric company halted all work on new projects
out of concern for the safety of their field staff after the outbreak of violence in late
April. However Hengky Hattu, YPM's Executive Director, has a friend in the electric
company, and hopes to be able to circumvent this challenge. on the whole, the Caleb
House should be finished by the end of June!
Those involved have deemed it fitting to close this phase of the project with a prayer
meeting on July 1. Staff members will spend the first night in the house and prepare
for this special time of consecration of the work the Lord has brought to completion.
Hengky has even planned a feast to celebrate the occasion. They will ask the Lord for
his blessing upon the second building and will place the first stone in its place during
this time of prayer. "Yes, it's going to be a special thanksgiving moment in the midst
of a turmoil season. God is good," wrote Semmy Littik, a consultant for the project
who maintains close e-mail contact with Jubilee Campaign.
They have promised to send photos of this special event, which we will eagerly look
forward to posting on the web so that you can see how much the Lord has done
through your generosity!
Another exciting development in the Maluku outreach is the implementation of five
areas of skills training for orphans who graduate from high school but do not pursue
university studies. At the moment, they have the opportunity to learn computer and
English skills, sewing, furniture manufacture, and poultry home industry. The latter
two are thanks to the generosity of businessmen in Ambon and Passo. Another
businessman has generously offered to build a poultry production unit in the yard of
the Caleb House for on-site training for the orphans. Other plans are being discussed
among the staff of YPM and YSW (Shield Maluku, the umbrella organization of which
YPM is a part) for further economic development and training for the families in
Maluku. YSW has a new staff member named Hery with a Master's Degree in Rural
Economic Development from an Australian university, and he is "joyfully willing" to be
part of the outreach in Maluku.
The completion of the Caleb House signals the beginning of wonderful new
opportunities to expand the outreach to the children of Maluku, providing not only
housing, but also trauma counseling and new economic prospects as well.
Semmy writes, "Please pray for all these plans, willing helpers, caring works and
good opportunities in God's time and plan."
