Ambon explosion kills one, injuring many
Jakarta, , May. 25 (UPI) -- A bomb exploded in the restive eastern Indonesian town of
Ambon Tuesday, killing at least one person and injured 16 others.
Police discovered three other home-made bombs, including one outside the
Maranatha Christian Church in Ambon, the main city of Indonesia's Moluccas is the
center of clashes between Muslims and Christians erupted last month. Police have
detonated the devices without incident.
The bomb blast, the second in three days, took place in the open market, police said.
One person was killed and 16 others injured, four seriously.
Sunday, a home-made bomb exploded in the town, killing one person and injuring four
others.
At least 38 people were killed last month in a fresh outbreak of religious violence in
Ambon, 1,450-miles northeast of Jakarta. It was the worst fighting since the Muslim
and Christian leaders signed a peace pact in early 2002 to end three years of conflict
that killed more than 6,000 people.
Residents said Tuesday's blast sparked tension. Government offices nearby the
explosion site immediately shut down.
