La Boheme is divided into four acts. The first takes place in the garret, where we meet the four young men, one by one: Rodolfo the poet; Marcello the painter; Colline the philosopher and Schaunard the musician. First, they outsmart the landlord. Then, Rodolfo falls instantly in love with a pale young stranger, Mimi. By tonight, they will be lovers.
The second act, a classic spectacle, takes place in the Latin Quarter, where Christmas Eve merriment is well underway. As the two new lovers woo, Marcello encounters Musetta, his old flame. Their affair had been a tempestuous, on-and-off saga. Currently, things are off, and she is on the arm of a rich, old man, but she gets rid of him by screaming that her shoe is too tight, which sends the hapless buzzard off on a convenient errand.
In Act 3, the situation has reversed. Marcello and Musetta are together, but Rodolfo and Mimi have decided to split. She thinks it's because he's jealous, but we soon find out he has been alarmed by her coughing. She has tuberculosis, and he fears that she will die. They sing goodbye as a gentle snowstorm falls, but the duet is too beautiful and their love is instantly rekindled.
In Act 4, Mimi does indeed die, her penniless, adoring friends around her. It is one of the most touching scenes in opera, when a tragic moment, expressed in passionate and exquisite music, conveys what words never can.
