Rocketed to Earth from the exploding planet Krypton, Superman was raised as an ordinary man and imbued with a sense of moral responsibility by an elderly couple called Jonathan and Martha Kent. He travelled the world for many years as Clark Kent in a bid to gain wisdom and experience with regard to his abilities before settling in Metropolis as a staff reporter at the Daily Planet newspaper. His role as a crusading journalist has alerted him to thousands of emergencies over the years and introduced him to Lois Lane, the city's star reporter. Lois and Clark were rivals at first, but later fell in love and married. He is regarded by many as the most influential figure in Earth history; a symbol of hope other heroes can only aspire towards.

Freelance artist Kyle Rayner was used to creating on a canvas or a sketchpad, but when the sole remaining Guardian of the Universe handed him the last power ring, Kyle could turn his imagination into reality. The immediate successor to legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Kyle was relatively inexperienced, but compensated for it with his eagerness and fertile imagination.

At first fairly cavalier about the heroic mantle he'd inherited, Kyle was forced to face responsibility when his girlfriend, Alex DeWitt, was murdered by the villain Major Force. Since then he's come to understand the legacy left by the long line of Green Lanterns, and feels the pressure of carrying on the proud tradition. Growing into his role gradually, Kyle's come to embrace being Green Lantern, his membership in the Justice League giving him the opportunity to take his place among the world's greatest heroes.

Aquaman's life as king and hero has been wrought with great triumph and tragedy. As an infant, the waterbreathing Prince Orin, heir to the Atlantean throne, was abandoned on a reef to die in the receeding tide. Saved by a dolphin, Porm, he was raised by her. A kindly lighthouse keeper, Arthur Curry, taught the ways and language of the surface world and Orin took Curry's name as his own. He met the Flash [Barry Allen], was dubbed Aquaman, and helped found the Justice League of America. With Aqualad, later Tempest, he became known as protector of all the oceans and its creatures. Orin always returned to Poseidonis to be their king. He met and married Mera, a queen from another dimension. Their first child died, Mera left him, his kingdom has been lost and regained. A villain, and lost his right hand. Throughout all the tragedy and triumph, there has never been a question that he is the King of the Seas.
