Soon afterwards, the whole JSA reformed as older heroes facing the dangers of a new generation, with Jay still an active member. With most the JSA's original roster of members now deceased, the team again disbanded, and Jay finally appeared to be easing into a graceful retirement. Thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, Prince Khufu and his lover, Chay-Ara, came into contact with Nth metal, an element from the planet Thanagar. Their exposure to the material left racial memories from the Thanagarians imprinted on them and, combined with their true love, strengthened their souls and the bond between them. They were murdered soon after by Hath-Set, a corrupt high priest of Anubis.
Over the next several thousand lifetimes, Khufu and Chay-Ara were reborn again and again, destined to meet and fall in love. In the 1940s, Khufu emerged as Carter Hall and, utilizing the Nth metal, became the hero known as Hawkman. Chay-Ara was reborn as Shiera Sanders, and fought by Hawkman's side as Hawkgirl. Hawkman served as chairman of the Justice Society of America for the majority of its existence, and both Hawks served with the JLA in that team's early adventures.
During the timeline-shifting battle called "Zero Hour," Carter and Shiera were both merged with Thangarian policeman Katar Hol, who adopted the Hawkman identity for a short time. Shiera did not survive the merging and died, leaving Carter without his soulmate.
Unbeknownst to Hawkman, Shiera's soul took root in her grand-niece, Kendra Saunders, who had just attempted suicide. While Kendra's soul moved on, her body lay vacant. Due to the odd nature of mid-life reincarnation, for all intents and purposes Shiera believed herself to still be Kendra Saunders. Recently, "Kendra" joined the JSA as Hawkgirl.
A dimension away, Carter Hall was separated from Katar, who subsequently perished. When Carter returned, he instantly saw through Kendra and recognized the soul of his beloved Shiera. However, Kendra is reluctant to accept his affection, much less return it. For the first time, one soulmate has rejected the other. Utilizing the anti-gravity Nth metal on their boots and wing harnesses, the Hawks can fly, carrying heavy loads with ease. Thanks to their lifetimes of memories, both have working knowledge of most weapons used on Earth from Ancient Egypt to the present day, though Hawkgirl's abilities are diminished due to her incomplete reincarnation.
