Ultimate Spider-Man

Spider-Man
Raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, Peter Parker is a kind-hearted 15-year-old who tries to make it through every day of his high-school career without getting picked on too badly. But Peter has a secret: At night, he sheds his studious trappings and dons the garb of the city's mysterious new protector: the amazing Spider-Man!

Real name: Peter Parker

Base of operations: General New York area
First appearance: Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000)

Height: 5'6"

Powers: Spider-Man possesses superhuman strength, reflexes and equilibrium; the ability to cling to most surfaces; and a sixth sense that warns him of impending danger.

Weapons: Spider-Man's wrist-mounted web-shooters discharge thin strands of web-fluid at high pressure. On contact with air, the long-chain polymer knits and forms an extremely tough, flexible fiber with extraordinary adhesive qualities.

History: On a class field trip to Osborn Industries, Peter Parker was bitten by one of the test animals: a spider. He soon found he had strength and speed he didn't know he possessed, and developed a sixth sense that would warn him of danger. Most shocking of all, he woke up in the middle of the night and discovered he could crawl on walls.

At first, Peter felt like a freak and didn't know where to turn. He found his new powers hard to cope with and control. He fought Flash Thompson, the school bully, and accidentally broke the boy's hand. He began experiencing mood swings, lashing out at his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. And he used his fledgling abilities to join the basketball team and become a pro wrestler.

His ego inflated by the heady feeling of wrestling stardom, Peter chose to mind his own business when he encountered a criminal fleeing the scene of a robbery -- though he could have captured the thief easily with his newfound spider-powers. A few nights later, a burglar entered the Parker home and demanded the family's money. When Ben quipped that the thief probably had more than they did, the man shot him at point-blank range.

Meanwhile, Peter had vowed to share his secret with the people who had raised him like a son. Returning home, he found police cars surrounding the house. Aunt May was hysterical.

When he overheard a police bulletin saying Ben's murderer had been cornered in a nearby warehouse, Peter donned his wresting costume and dashed off to avenge his uncle's death. Upon seeing the hoodlum's face, he recognized him as the crook he had allowed to escape days earlier. The moment Peter realized he could have saved his uncle, he understood the words Ben had spoken to him that night: "With great power, there must come great responsibility."

Peter would never forget those words, and he set forth to use his powers to help others. So was born the sensational Spider-Man!

Green Goblin

But when teenager Peter Parker accidentally was infected by a genetically altered test spider and began to manifest amazing arachnid-like abilities, Osborn decided to make himself the next Oz guinea pig...with disastrous results. History: Since 1973, Osborn Industries Inc. has been providing innovative materials for the manufacturing, construction, automotive and chemical-processing industries, as well as numerous others. A global leader, the company produces chemically engineered products with a special focus on the replacement of EHS hazardous acids and solvents.

What the public doesn't know is that owner Norman Osborn developed a mystery drug called Oz -- which he tested on animals, with a particular interest in spiders. One of the arachnids in question bit young Peter Parker, a student touring Osborn's facilities. Fearing a lawsuit, Osborn kept a watchful eye on Peter and was prepared to have him assassinated. But the teenager began to react strangely to the spider bite, exhibiting arachnid-like abilities far beyond human.

Osborn came to the conclusion that the Parker accident actually was one of his greatest achievements. He then decided to make himself the next Oz guinea pig, injecting the wonder drug without the catalyst of the arachnid. But the experiment went horribly awry: A fiery lab explosion killed almost everyone who had witnessed Osborn's terrifying transformation. His mysterious hulking frame appeared at his own mansion in the middle of the night, destroying it in a ball of fire. The explosion killed his wife; his son -- Peter's best friend, Harry Osborn -- barely escaped the horror.

The next day, the Osborn goblin attacked Peter's high school. But was he there to kill the fledgling wall-crawler, or his own son? Not knowing the insane attacker's true identity, Peter donned his Spider-Man costume and tried his best to subdue his first super-powered foe. But the myriad questions raised by the villain's appearance may never be answered, as he seemed to plummet to his death from atop a bridge following an amazing battle involving the authorities and New York's newest hero.
