Bowling For Columbine

Bowling For Columbine is the Oscar winning documentary by Michael Moore about America’s gun culture. Deserving of the Oscar, he dives into this world of fear and paranoia that the American public has come to feed on. The title of this documentary is based on the fact that the two gunmen in the Columbine school shooting went to a morning bowling class before opening fire on students and staff in their high school. That incident is discussed at length. Moore explores the powers of the NRA to the “evilness” of Marilyn Manson. He contrasts this nation of fear and violence with other first world countries, like Germany and France, by asking how these countries, all with violent backgrounds can have such different belief systems today. What makes American so crazy? He really does a great job of exploring these different ideas and discussing them thoroughly. I know he has a biased edge to his work, and this was no exception. There are two sides to every coin, in some cases, one is obviously the wrong side, but he spends his time attacking the other side. He’s right (at least I think so), but I thought he’d spend more time saying “here are the facts. Isn’t is obvious what the right answer is?” Overall, this was a very important film that came out at a pivotal time in our culture.
