Down With Love

Down With Love is a throwback, cheesy lovefest reminiscent of Pillow Talk. Having never seen Pillow Talk, I can only judge Down With Love, starring Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger, on its own merit. Renee Zellweger plays Barbara Novak, a "spinster librarian" from Maine, who comes to New York to promote her new book, Down With Love. In it she tells women the secret to career success. Women don't need love, they need chocolate. Women can accomplish anything a man can; they just have to think like a man. In walks Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor), Ladie's Man, Man's Man, Man about Town. He's out to prove Barbara wrong, and make her fall in love with him. What transpires is a hilarious and well dressed story. The humor was very tongue-in-cheek. They reveled in the wit. The costumes were fabulous- half the fun was waiting to see what they wore next. I can't say their chemistry was the best. I've always thought something was wrong with Renee Zellweger-- but Ewan McGregor was fabulous (and always is!). His smile was infectious and the balance between corny and cool was just right. This was an enjoyable film, well worth watching!
