1996 winner of the Best Picture oscar, The English Patient is an epic story of forbidden love, war, and human devotion. It stars Ralph Fiennes, Kristen Scott Thomas, oscar winner Juleit Binoch, and Willem Dafoe. It starts off wiht a horrible plane crash that burns a man beyond belief. He's eventually brought to British medics where, he having forgotten his name or where he came from, they label him simply "English Patiet". His wounds leave him incapasitated to travel at any leangth. A nurse, Hannah (played by Juliet Binoch), who seems to have everyone she loves die on her, decides to stay behind with the English patient. He claims he knows nothing of his past but through flashbacks and a stranger (Willem Dafoe) that stays with them, the truth of his life is revealed. The romantic tale is between Kristen Scott Thomas' character, Katherine, and Ralph Fiennes' characeter Count Almasy. The movie is based on Michael Ondajji's book of the same title and the movie does such a wonderful jopb of recapturing what the book was. It was all quite dramatic and gripping unitl the very end. Of course like any poetically tragic movie, this one is about lost love and the idea that no matter how much someone loves another, things will blow up in your face (literally for Count Almasy). But that is what this movie is about so the way it was put together, weaving between the patient and the nurse to Count Almasy and Katherine was spectacular. Juleit Binoch did an oscar worthy job. And this movie wasn't just loved by audiences but the academy as well, giving it oscars for: Best supporting actress, best sound, best picture, best music, best film editing, best director, best costume design, best cinematography, and best art direction.
