Wooden handicrafts from Indonesia,
especially from Bali, were well known from centuries. In the olden days
the native arts of Bali mirrored a well-ordered common society which ruled
by feudal lords and sustained by the guiding rituals of the Hindu
religion. Palaces and temples as political and religious centers of Bali,
were also represent centers of the arts. No important buildings was
complete without a share of splendid crafts. They appeared in relief,
carvings, paintings and other handicrafts.
At the turn of this century, a dramatic
change placed the handicraft in a new look. Rather than a decorative craft
for enriching the decor of temples, palaces and household objects,
handicraft become an independent art form and competition encourage
crafters to enriched its designs. More and more crafters are given the
chance to express their talents and crafters are extremely skillful at
their trade. Besides, the Balinese have a knack for mixing modernity with
tradition.
With a growing international consciousness
and as a developing country, Indonesia still entering a period of
transition. But the Balinese have achieved a harmonious order to their
environment without any disrupting the beauty of nature, and have created
a society that can contribute something of value to the world.
