Airsoft Elite BPAG v1.12 MP5-A4 Review

The story:

I had ordered my AE MP5 form Eric at www.airsoftatlanta.com for $247.50 that price included gun, charger, battery, and shipping. I'm not sure for how much longer Eric is going to have them on sale but if you want a MP5 for cheaper than a Marui one then get one while they are still on sale. Incase you're not farmilar with the AE MP5s the V1.10 witch is what I am reviewing comes standard with the ICS renforced gear box(sells new for $40), a upgraded spring(brags to shoot around 300fps but I think it shoots lower, I will talk about this more later), ICS metal motor heat sink (sells new for $5), ICS metal body with esay take down(sells new for $105), and last but not least you get a ICS HIcap mag in replace of the standard mag(sells for $35). If you wanted to make this gun out of a Marui one then you would have to spend around $400 to add all the extra stuff that the v1.10 comes with. The v1.12 is the same as the v1.10 but it comes upgraded with metal bushings and shoots 350fps and cost around $325 to $350. The v2.0 has a complete metal body including the cocking tube and sites, every thing that is metal on the real steel is metal on the v2.0 and it also shoots 400fps I hear; if you want a review of the v2.0 then go checkout the one that pikachoad did at www.airsoftplayers.com. Well I had managed to decide to order when www.airsoftatlanta.com had bin moving ad that was a mistake because they had lost every bodys orders for 24hours and so I had to reorder again. www.airsoftatlanta.com had a lot of AE MP5 orders so mine was put on back order and it did not get shipped out till about a week later and if you are as much as a gun freek as I am, waiting for a gun is real painful but they had mangenged to get it to me in 1-1/2 weeks but this was not there fault it was because there sever had crashed or some thing but I would highly recomend them.

First impressions:

Sorry to bore you guys with that stuff above I just wanted to give you all the story and list the stuff that the v1.10 comes with. When I got the AE MP5-A4 in the mail, witch had come with my brothers AE MP5-SD5 witch we ordered at the same time, I pushed my brother of his feet and ripped the box open and there was the plain cardboard box in the bottom of the box they shipped the guns in. I pulled the box lid of and man was that gun sweet looking you could not really tell the metal body from the plastic cocking tube because they blended it so well. The first thing I noticed when I picked it up was how light it was compared to my M4 and my M4 does not even have a metal body on it but I guess that is why they call it an SMG(Sub Machine Gun)because it is small and light. The really disappointing part of it was that the selector switch broke of with in 10 minuets of playing with it(witch is supposedly fix on the v2.0), it was no big deal though because I just got a Marui one to replace it even though I could not use it at the game that www.marylandairsoft.com did on July the 28th because I had to wait for the switch to come in but that was no big deal though because I just used my brothers SD5. The only thing that sucks about this gun is that every thing is plastic except the body, selector switch, trigger, flash hider, rear sling piece, clip cache, cocking handle, mag, and the pins, any thing I did not mention is plastic externally any way. The only markings on this gun is the 9x19mm on the left side and the 9x19mm on the clip, as you can see from the picture below there are no markings where they should be on the top of the body. The gun looks impressive.

So how does it preform:

This gun has a really nice rate of fire witch I guesstimate it to be around 15 to 16 rounds a minuet and you get the high rate of fire due to two things one the battery and two from the Turbo 2000 motor witch is said to be the same as the EG1000 and most defiantly fires faster than my M4A1, it seems to work just fine any way. If you remember what I said above about the selector switch breaking, well any way I expected it to break and you should expect your switch to break sooner or later so far the selector switch has not broken on my brothers AE MP5 yet so as of how long the switch lasts it really depends on the gun and how well they made the switch I guess they just didn't do such a hot job with mine. If you have already gotten a AE MP5 and your switch has broken or you want to order a switch for it then go to www.airsoftsupply.com for a replacement or a spare. The switch that you get with the AE MP5s are pretty sloppy on the smoothness both my brothers and mine were the same way, the Marui switch helped allot and I also think that a Systema selector plate would help get rid of the problem mostly;I was talking to Pikachoad at www.airsoftplayers.com told me that if you take some super glue and glue were the bar on the switch meet the rotating piece on the grip then it works much better. Airsoft Atlanta says that the AE MP5s they sell shoot around 300fps, witch is not a lie but a little off of the truth I would say that it shoots some where between 270fps and 285fps witch is not bad considering that the Marui MP5s clock between 260fps and 263fps so even though you don't get a great upgrade you get some thing but you could just as easily put in a M100 or M120 and metal bushings, if you like the Systema parts better then put a 120% or 140% spring in; I plan to put some standard flat ratio gears, metal bushings, Systema 120% spring, metal guide rod with ball bearing, polycarbonate piston, and polycarbonate piston head with ball bearing, I may put aluminum piston in but I hear that they cause allot of stress any way I plan to put that in when I get money, HEHE yeah right. I will give you guys the update on the parts when I get them. The gun accuracy wise it its great I can easily get about a 2+/- group at 10 yards and can stay inside of a sheet of paper at 75 feet but even though you can hit a person sized target at 100 feet accuracy starts going down really fast the farther you go out I would say the farthest you can go with out using luck is 120feet witch is still not bad. I will post the range test when I get some free time. In case you have never used a Airsoft MP5 witch in till I had gotten one I did not know this because I had never handled a airsoft MP5, many of people said that there was a lever on the out side of the MP5 that controlled the hop up and no body ever had a pic showing where it was well here you go it is right to your right and up or down depends on the size of your browser. The hop up is so direct and easy to set pretty much all there is to it is push it all the way forward no hop up, pull all the way back full hop up. The way I have it set in the pic witch is in the middle is what I use to accurately shoot at 75 feet.

if you have never seen a site picture of an MP5 then click here and this is pretty much what it looks like.

Come on in:

First of going inside the gun requires no skill at all thanks to the quick take down body. All you do to get to the gear box it take a screw driver and take the screw out that is in the pin right behind the clip well and then pull the pin out and just pull the whole front end of and it is really that easy not much more to it; Although on mine you have to loosen the stock a little but no biggie. Since all the screws on the gear box are Phillips head you don't need any torx bits. If you are going to take the gear box apart then my suggestion to you is don't inless you have some experience doing this or if you decide you want to learn then try to find some one that has experience doing this and have he/she help you do it; if you think that you are really good at that kind of stuff then you can go to www.airsoftplayers.com and they have a guide to taking V2 gear boxes apart but please don't try to take it apart without experience and incase you decide to go ahead and do it any way then look at the bottom and you will see a disclaimer so if you brake it-it is your fault alone. Inside the gear box is pretty much the norm.

The conclusion:

In my opinion this is an excellent gun an I would suggest it to any one wanting a great gun, hay every one has or had a MP5 variant in there collection. This gun is just awesome it has tons of features and advantages over the Marui ones and even has a better price tag. Although if you have the money then I would buy the AE V2.0 because you get even more for your money but if you don't want to spend around $360 for a guns then go with the V1.10 or v1.12. I give this gun a 9 out of a ten. If you have any questions about this gun or about this review then e-mail me at Finealways@home.com

10/02/01 Update: I made a mistake on this review, the gun I have is really a v1.12 not a v1.10. Also on a skirmish I was on with Marylandairsoft.com my gun broke in the middle of the third game and I had stripped it in the parking lot and figured out that the tappet plate had broke( if you don't know what a tappet plate is- it is a plastic plate inside the gear box that pushes the air nozzle forward to push the bb in the chamber and make a air seal) I can not say that is was the tappet plate for sure because I could not open the gear box because of the warranty stuff but that is what all my experience told me just from looking at it. My guess of what caused it was that I had dry fired it too many times from not cranking the hicap enough witch caused the timing to be off ( if you are interested in knowing what the timing is then E-mail me at the address at the top) and then caused the tappet plate to break form stress. I had sent it back for repairs witch cost me nothing for the repairs but it cost me $25 for both way shipping, insured of curse, and they fixed it and got it back to me in a week. Now the hop up is a little weak but when I get a chance I will take it apart and fix it( witch I think I will go do once I am done here) and I will let you all know how that works... The guys that fixed my gun also put a new selector switch on but I decided to put my Marui one back on because it works better and is smoother.
