P O K E M O N

okay. I made this page around two years ago when Pokemon was still in. I've sorta grown out of it's apparent appeal, but I'll always have a fondness for that yellow electrical rat, Pikachu. I must say that most people should know what Pokemon are by now. Even if you hate them, or love them, they are basically famous thanks to the tv show, card games, figurines, and especially the nintendo games out on game boy advance, the most recent being the Pokemon Sapphire.

The foundation of the story is the quest of trying to either search and even capture the most amount of the little creatures named Pocket Monsters that live in the world of Kanto and Johto. Based on the Game Boy Game, the TV series goes about trying to introduce the some 250 kinds of Pokemon to the world.. in a rather long about, repetitive and tedious way. The leading character is Ash Ketchum. He's only ten years old, but his mother allows him to travel the world to fulfill his dream. Damn, I wished my mom allowed me that much freedom. Anyway, Ash's dream is to become the greatest Pokemon master in the world. On the day where he gets to pick one of the three elemental pokemons from the famous Professor Oak, he overslept and got stuck with the only pokemon left, an electrical type called Pikachu. Pikachu right away doesn't listen to Ash and the little rat won't follow any of his new master's orders. But when the flying pokemon, Spearows, started to attack Pikachu, Ash shielded Pikachu with his own body. Pikachu is touched by this and henceforth is loyal to Ash.

Ash then sets forth from his hometown of Pallet with Pikachu to see the world and to challenge gym leaders to collect badges. He later befirends Misty and Brock, two gym leaders, and they set off together to fulfill each of their own dreams. Misty, a red-head girl who wants to excel in water pokemon and slinted eyed, girl crazy Brock who wants to be a pokemon care-taker. Also, Ash has a rival, Gary Oak, who from time to time shows up to either goad Ash on with his cheerleading squad. In the two earlier seasons where he traveled exclusively within the Kanto region to get into the Indigo League Competition, he managed to get into the top sixteen. Not bad, huh? Afterwards in the Orange Archipelcago islands Ash collected four shell badges in order to qualify to challenge and beat the orange league crew leader, Drake.

After I started college and I didn't have the leisure of a television, Ash was traveling in the Johto to meet the qualifications for the Johto league. His current six pokemon were Pikachu, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Noctowl, and Bulbasaur. Sorry to say, I have no more clue as to what's happening anymore.

My Bias Comments:

Around one year ago, I was totally addicted to this series. Currently it's still running in America, on Saturday Mornings. Back then, I practically knew all the names of the Pokemon and can relay what happened in each episode from memory. Heh, but then its appeal began to dwindle and I just stopped following what was happening. One reason is because of the repititiveness of all the episodes. Someone is in trouble or the gang meets someone who needs help, be it a human or Pokemon and the whole episodes goes about trying to fix the problem is always fixable. In the middle there will be that tired interference routine of team rocket's Jessie and James and that Meowth as they try to capture Pikachu. The only episodes that hold special meaning and suspense was the gym battles which were most often few and far inbetween. Another reason was that the series didn't seem like it could ever end. It's scope is far to big for me to percieve.

In addition, I have brought the game that came out from Nintendo on the Game Boy Color, Pokemon Silver. It is quite an improvement from the original Red, Blue and Yellow. The colors offer better pictures of the Pokemon which in itself is more detailed. I also like all the new equipment and the idea of battling Red, the master trainer and protagonist of the original Red, Yellow, and Blue games. One thing to complain about is that the gyms in the Kanto League are so easy compared to the Johto. This RPG style disregards most of the elemental powers of the Pokemon. Therefore as long as your level is higher than your opponents, then you should be okay. (UsagiSakura 10/10/03)
