Card Captor Sakura
This cutsy show is about elementary school kid, Kinomoto Sakura and how she ventures on a quest to recapture the Clow Cards that she accidentically set free. Clow cards are sorta like a deck of tarot cards but with the right spell chant, and the release of the
seal, the cards will unleash their power. She had heard a noise in her father's study and when she went in, one book caught her attention. She opened the book and inside were cards. She read the first one, "windy", out loud and a powerful wind caused the Clow cards to scatter and blow away. Then the guardian of the cards, Keroberos, a small little spunky flying doll-like creature emerges from the book and wakes up confused.
Because Sakura was able to open the book, this means that she is a card captor and she must recapture all those escaped cards again. And so with her rich friend/ distant cousin, Tomoyo (Madison) helps her out with whacky, super cute outfits and later with Li Syaoran, a descendent of Clow Reed, the creator of the Clow cards.
Anyway, this show has action and magical elements. Also, being that it is the mangaka group, Clamp's, creation, it has an unpredictable element. For when Sakura managed to capture all
52 cards, she was tested by Yue, the moon guardian as opposed to Keroberos, the sun. Yue has been given the duty to judge whether the successor, Sakura, is worthy to recieve the cards made by his former master, Clow Reed and hence make her his new master. What is surprising here is that Yue is actually the alternate personality of Yukito (Julian), Sakura's brother's friend as well as her long time crush.
Of course Sakura passes by managing to contain Yue with her Clow cards. One would think everything will quiet down now, but when a new transfer student Eriol (Eli) comes from Britian, strange things start happening. But then the gang discovers that she needs to turn all the clow cards into sakura cards or else they won't work properly. Of course, she can't turn them all into sakura cards at once because her magical powers are still not mature enough to handle all that much stress and also because each time the cards are called on, they must perform a duty or else they'll get confused and runs. I think that's enough facts without giving away the ending. Along with Li Syaoran, Tomoyo and the guardians Keroberos and Yue, Sakura has a handful trying to succesfully control these cards and find out why Eriol (Eli) is manipulating events...
Spoilers: When Sakura had turned all the cards to sakura cards, Eriol stepped down in his wierd costume from his high perch. The ending has Eriol explaining that when Clow Reed died, he split himself into two, one was Eriol and the other, Sakura's father. This is why both Sakura and her brother Touya (Tory) were able to sense magic. Now Eriol splits his own magical power to her father, Fujitaka so that the most powerful magician in the world now is Sakura herself. Eriol says that there were a lot of things that he couldn't take account of. Yue, who was always very attached to CLow Reed, asked him why he didn't come back to claim them. Eriol replies that he is no longer Clow Reed and that Sakura will be their Master. Li needs to go back to hong kong since now everything is solved. And in the WB ending, you see Sakura face down saying, "he left".
Which doesn't really provide optimum closure.
My Bias Opinion:
This show is sorta lame, being that I only watched the English dubbed version on WB. The ending showed and I seriously think they cut out quite a few scenes, making the whole thing incomprehensible. Plus I really think they showed the episodes way
out of order. Again, there's the repititive nature where a they find a clow card and then capture it, but it's not too bad because her costume changes. Issues like teacher-student and boy-boy were quite abundant in the anime. I don't really mind but it's almost totally expected of Clamp. I watched this anime at first basically because it was by clamp and I have become a fan of their work.
By the by, I also watched the sakura movie, which takes place after the end of the anime series, in Japanese- English subtitled. It was cool, with much more action
and more romance.. heh. :) Their japanese voice acting is a change from the English and the voice for sakura is super childish! I guess that should be right, since she is a elemantary school kid... (UsagiSakura 10/10/03)
