Fushigi Yuugi
It's a story about two junior high girls, Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui. They were studying for
their high school exams at the city library when they found this book entitled "Four Gods'
Sky and Earth". Once they open it, they get sucked back into an ancient world that is similar to China.
After meeting up with a young man named, Tamahome, the two girls start questioning why they are here.
In this new world, there are four rivaling countries, Konan, Kutou, Hokkan and Sailo,
each protected by their own god. These gods can only be summoned by their Mikos (a.k.a.
priestesses), but these girls must be from another world. Each Miko must gather the 7 Senshi,
who each have an embodiment of a constellation in that quadrant of the sky over the country, and each gifted with
unique powers from the gods. The duty of these Senshi is to protect their Miko. When the Miko
has summoned the god, she will be granted three wishes.
Both of girls manages to go back to their own world but Miaka ends up going back to the book again. The only way that she can communicate with the real world is through Yui who through their school uniform are linked. Miaka meets up with the young Emperor of Konan, Hotohori who falls for her and asks her to find the 7 suzaku seishis to bring prosperity to his country as well as allow her to return back home. As Yui reads the "Four Gods' Sky and Earth" book, she is able to know what's happening to Miaka. When Miaka manages to actually come back to the real world with the help of a powerful old magic mage, Yui in reverse is sucked into the book. Once Miaka realizes this, she enters the world again. This time she uses her hair ribbon to form a tie in the real world with her brother, who we will see periodically reading this book and hence know what's going on with Miaka.
In order to go back home, Miaka accepts the role of Suzaku no Miko, protecter of Konan Country
and the duty to gather the 7 Suzaku Seishi. Be aware that once the Suzaku is found, they take on their senshis star name as opposed to their given birth name.
The first is Tamahome, an 18 year old, who's symbol of ogre allows him fighting ability. He will be the main male lead in the anime. Hotokiri, the emperor as well as a great swordsman, carrying the Shinken sword. He is always trapped in his palace and therefore lonely, but very vain. Nuriko who we think is princess, has a crush on Hotokiri. He's a drag queen with good intentions and the power of strength. Chichiri a magic wielding monk who always wears a mask to hide his scar from his past. Being the oldest of the group, he's the main person to for big spells or wise advice. Tasuki is a 17 year old mountain bandit with fire sparking fan. He talks a lot, often with little tact and has a temper. Mitsukake with the ability to heal all aliments but only one per day or else he becomes very weak. And lastly Chiriko, who is a gentle, shy, scholarly 13 year old. Since he appears the latest, there are much less things we know of his past.
Hate, jealousy, and manipulated destiny drives Yui to become Seiryuu no Miko, protecter of
Kutou Country and a mortal rival of Suzaku no Miko. Will these two friends become mortal enemies?
What will be the outcome of this Mysterious Play?
Spoilers: Okay, what I do know is that alotta people die in the series. For starters, Mitsukake from trying to heal a little girl, little Chiriko, Nuriko and the king, Hotokiri. But in the OVAs we find that they all are floating around the world with their most precious people. The OVAs act like a sort of closure for the dead senshis death as well as the living. After all past regrets such Chichiri's scar and NUriko's brother... Taka needs to face a Tamahome replica and then defeat the enemy again. After the battle and OVA ends, they all get reincarnated and although Taka and Miaka have returned to their own real world, we see that the remaining Suzaku Senshi, Chichiri and Tasuki are living their own lives while the others have found peace. It's a bitter sweet ending.
My Bias Opinions
I saw very little of this anime. I think only 4 episodes, but it was enough for me to want to know more about it. So most of the info I provided here are based on the web. I did read three of the eighteen volume mangas by the managaka Yuu Watase so I do get what's happening, but it might not be specific enough. This anime is very funny at times, especially when Chichiri says Daa! At times the plot is very dark. I hear that so many of the episodes revolve on the bad guys trying to rape Miaka so that she loses her virginity and hence can't be no priestess. Another dark situation is how Yui is burdened with the thought that she was raped and how betrayal causes both Miaka and Tamahome to always go through pain trying to determine if love will conquer all. Another unfortunate side effect is that since Yui and Miaka are on opposite sides in this book world, their friendship is tested.
The series ends with the battle of the Suzaku and Seiryuu senshis battling it out in the real world. There are quite a few casualities, which made me real teaery eyed. The good thing is that Tamahome gets reincarnated or replaced into an altenate form, Taka who belongs in the real world and who just happens to love Miaka as well. Also in the Fushigi Yuugi OVAs, the story continues where Miaka and Tamahome return to the book world to try to get back Tamahome's memories through crystal balls that each of the other Suzaku senshi unwittingly obtained. If not, Taka will disappear. That OVA I have not much info about. Only that it's around 6 episodes though. (UsagiSakura 10/10/03)
