Decatur Art Guild offers arts and crafts show

DECATUR - The Decatur Art Guild will present an arts and crafts show in conjunction with the Alabama Jubilee celebration at Point Mallard Park next weekend.

It will be in front of the old ice rink Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The festival at Point Mallard Park will begin Saturday at 6:30 a.m. and will feature many events, including hot air balloon flights, music, food and a race.

Admission, parking, concerts and some children's activities are free. Some activities will require tickets.

Celtic musicians to open City Lights, Stars concert

The City Lights and Stars concert series at Burritt on the Mountain - A Living Museum will open Friday with the Celtic band Henri's Notions.

The five-member acoustic ensemble, based in Tuscaloosa, will perform traditional Celtic and American music. They have toured the southern and eastern United States.

Concert goers are encouraged to dress casually and bring a blanket or lawn chair. The concert at 3101 Burritt Drive will begin at 7:30 p.m. The gate will open at 6:30. In case of rain, the concert will be moved.

Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the Burritt Museum Store, AB Stephens Music, the Fret Shop and the Market Place. Tickets at the gate are $10. Concert goers may order a picnic supper for $12. Deadline for supper orders is noon Thursday.

The concert is sponsored by Teledyne Brown Engineering, The Huntsville Times and WLRH public radio.

Other concerts in the series will be Phil Weaver and Friends on June 20; Rocket City Brass on July 4, the Ken Watters group on July 25, the Premiere Winds on Aug. 15 and the Tango Project on Sept. 5.

Taiwanese Association to present theater group

To celebrate Taiwanese American Heritage Week, the Huntsville Taiwanese Association will present Gang-A-Tsui Theater at the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chan Auditorium Saturday from 3-4:30 p.m.

The performers will present a series of nanguan tunes and nanguan opera. The music is called quiet and elegant and dates from the 12th century. A five-person ensemble plays traditional instruments.

Some of the traditional instruments are a vertical end-blown flute, a horizontal bamboo flute, foot drum, gongs and a double-reed suona.

There is no admission charge. Tickets are available at the UAH Music Department at 824-6436, or from Peter Wang at 882-6962 or Yen-Sen Chen at 883-1938.

Jazz band, combo to play at river concert

DECATUR - The Hartselle High School Jazz Band will perform at Concerts by the River at Rhodes Ferry Park Monday at 6:30 p.m. Charlie Lyle Combo will perform at 7:15 p.m.

Bring a picnic and lawn chair to the free concert put on by the Decatur Parks & Recreation Department. If it rains, the show will be canceled. For more information, call Paul Stroud at (256) 778-8721.

Adult students to show work

"Artistic Journey 2003," an art show of adult students of Barbara Miller, will be on view at Southerland Station Art Studios, 402-B Governors Drive, today 1-4 p.m.

Three generations of art students will show work in a variety of media including graphite, colored pencil, acrylics and oils. Several students have won awards in area art shows.

Artistic Images Galleryfeatures 'Dark to Light'

Noel Shinn, working in oil on canvas, is the featured artist at Artistic Images Gallery, 2115 Whitesburg, through June 30.

Her exhibition, "Dark to Light," features realistic, large-scale still lifes using objects with textured surfaces and presented in vivid color forming a dramatic effect.

Art museum willoffer summer classes

The Huntsville Museum of Art's Museum Academy, 300 Church St., is offering summer classes for children and adults.

Children's classes begin June 2 and include puppetry, Art of Latin America and clayworks. Classes for high school students and adults begin June 5 and include pottery, beginning oil painting and drawing and calligraphy.

Artists Colony looking for ideas

GUNTERSVILLE - Mountain Valley Artists Colony will have introductory meetings at the gallery, 300 Gunter Ave., Monday at noon and 5:30 p.m.

The group will brainstorm for ideas for new exhibit venues and opportunities.

Seasoned Performersto put on 'Ship Shape'

The Seasoned Performers from Birmingham will present their one-act play, "Ship Shape at Sea," at the Madison Senior Center, 1282 Hughes Road, Thursday at 12:15 p.m.

The troupe, organized in 1984, are senior volunteer actors who tour with their own one-act plays and reading programs to seniors and children in more than 70 communities yearly.

There is no admission charge. Madison Arts Council and Crestwood Medical Center are sponsoring the performance. For more information or tickets, call 885-1813.

This year's play is supported by the Jefferson County Senior Citizens Services and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Their Web site is www.seasonedperformers.com.

Teens and teachers needed for 'Fame'

The Huntsville Community Chorus Association will hold auditions for its summer musical, "Fame," at Fantasy Arts Center, 3312 Long Ave., Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Parts are available for 20 persons who appear to be of high school age. Minimum audition age is 14. Up to 10 adult roles as teachers are also available.

The show will be directed by Susan Brown, assisted by Dwayne Craft. Music director is Bill Lloyd. Choreographer is Nancy Keyser-Shade.

Performance dates will be Aug. 1-3 and 7-9 at the Von Braun Center Playhouse, 700 Monroe St.
