GEORGE H. BRAITHWAITE


Profile

George was born in Georgetown, Guyana, where he participated such sports as soccer and cricket. After a brilliant career in track and field as a 100 and 200 meters sprinter, he migrated to the United States where he continued to compete for the New York Pioneer Track and Field Club.

George started working at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City and at the late age of 23 took up table tennis as a hobby. The achievements which followed were phenomenal!

And history was made!

Table Tennis Highlights

In 1970:
Represented the United States Table Tennis Association as a Goodwill Ambassador to several countries in Central America playing exhibition matches: Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador

1971:
Member of he US Team on the Historic Ping Pong Diplomacy Trip to the People’s Republic of China.
Member of the US Team to the World’s T.T. Championships in Nagoya, Japan.
Won the Caribbean and Central American Championships in Kingston, Jamaica.

1972-1982:
Represented the US in the following countries: France, Jamaica, Canada and in the US in International competition.

1979:
Won Caribbean Championships in Aruba.

1983:
Represented the US at the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela

1984:
Won the Prestigious Canadian International Open Championships, including the Senior events.

1984-1985:
Selected by the United States Olympic Committee and the United States Table Tennis Association as the Amateur Athlete of the year.

1989:
Won two gold medals at the United States Olympic Sports Festival in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

INDUCTEE: United States of America Table Tennis Hall of Fame.

1987-1992:
Several times US Senior Champion. Won Caribbean Reunion Championships in Brooklyn, NY.

1993-1999:
Won United Nations Championships. Invited to Bermuda by the Bermuda TT Association to coach and implement TT Programs in the Schools.

1999: Elected Vice President of the United States of America Table Tennis (USATT) Association.
