The Forrestal class was the first of the "super carrier" generation. These were the first American aircraft carriers specifically designed for launching and landing jet planes, so they were built with the angeled flight decks that World War II carriers were modified to after the war. The Forrestals were originally designed with 5 inch gun mounts, but were replaced by missile launchers in the late 1960's. All were decommissioned in the 1990's, and two are in reserve in Bremerton, Washington. Three carriers are wanted as museums in Maryland, Rhode Island, and Washington. There are no known museum plans for the Independence, who remains in reserve.
