By far the largest class of World War II era carriers, the Midway class was commissioned too late to take part in World War II, although the three completed vessels saw a great deal of duty in the Cold War, and were the first carriers to have an angled flight deck, which was added later. The Franklin D Roosevelt was decommissioned in 1977, but the Coral Sea and Midway were commissioned until the 1990's. Coral Sea became the largest warship ever scrapped, but an organization in California is attempting to acquire the Midway was a museum ship.
