Florida was ceded to the US by Spain on February 22, 1819, after long negotiations. As part of the deal the US gave up its claim to Texas and Spain gave up Florida in place of its $5 million debt it owed to the US.
American steamship Savannah made first part-sail part-steam powered crossing of the Atlantic. It made the 29 day journey from Savannah, Georgia to Liver Pool, England.
