  • The Missouri Compromise was passed by Congress in 1820. This compromise settled the dispute over power held in the Senate by free states and slave states, because  Maine and Missouri had both applied to statehood. And both of these states where to become free states because no land from the Louisiana Purchase was to become a slave state. This meant if both where to become states the North would gain much control in the Senate, so the southerns where only going to reject the soon-to-be states petitions for statehood. With the help of Speaker of the House, Henry Clay and Senator Jesse B. Thomas a compromise was made where the slave restrictions on Missouri where lifted and both states entered statehood at the same time.


  • In this year Mexico agreed to let American citizens settle Texas.


  • In 1820 the US decided to send free slaves as immigrants back to Africa. The first organized trip consist consisted of 86 freed blacks and went to Sierra Leone. However theses trips where unpopular with the freed slaves and they preferred to stay in America.


  • Congress passes the Public Land Act, lowering the price of western lands to $1.25 an acre. Though real estate speculators gain the most from the Act, it is intended to promote settlement of the West.


  • American explorer Daniel Boone dies at 85.


  • President James Monroe  wins re-election, defeating John Quincy Adams.


  • American Nathaniel Palmer spots the continent of Antarctica and become the first person to see the continent.
