1823

  • On December 2, 1823, James Monroe, in the seventh annual address to Congress, announced the Monroe Doctrine. This doctrine was addressed to the European powers and stated that the countries of Europe had no business in the Americas. It stated that they could no longer colonize the area and could not interfere with the new independent countries of the Americas. Monroe did not say how he would enforce this, but Britain supported the Monroe Doctrine, because they didn't not want Spain to regain its former colonies. This Doctrine was stilled held upon by many presidents in later years.

  • "The American Continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, henceforth not be considered as subjected for future colonization by any European Powers."*

-James Monroe- in a message to Congress concerning the Monroe Doctrine, Dec. 2, 1823
