1824

  • The Election of 1824 was one of the closest in American history. The race was between John Quincy Adams, General Andrew Jackson, Speaker of the House Henry Clay, and Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford. The final electoral vote was Jackson-99, Adams-84, Crawford-41, and Clay-37. Since it was so close the House of Representatives voted on the winner of the top three canidates. Clay decided to support Adams, so John Quincy Adams won. Later, Adams choose Henry Clay as his Secretary of State, which upset many people because they believed the two had worked out a deal to get Adams to be president.
