Safeguarding from Hackers

Hackers, also known as phreaks, crakers, and spies, are people who try to break in to confidential files and information through the use and knowledge of computers. There is a community and shared culture of expert programmers and networking experts that take history back through decades to the first time-sharing minicomputers and the earliest ARPAnet experiments. The members of this culture originated the term`hackers'. Hackers built the internet, created the operating systems. In a sense, they make the World Wide Web work. Most things that hackers do is out of sight, working for regular companies and universities without being obvious.

Hackers are not just confined to computer software because they are people who can apply a hacker job to anything. Software hackers recognize their kind elsewhere and may call them "hackers" also

There are other groups of people who call themselves hackers, but to other hackers they are not. These are people (mainly adolescent males) who get a kick out of breaking into computers and phreaking the phone system. Real hackers call these people "crackers", "phreaks", and "spies". Most journalists and writers use "hacker" to describe them.
