The Navy and Marine Corps Medal was established on August 7, 1942. It is awarded to recognize any individual of the Armed Forces of the United States or of a friendly foreign nation who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguishes himself by acts of heroism and meritorious service not involving actual conflict with an enemy.
Perhaps the most famous recipient of this medal was Lt. (jg) John F. Kennedy for his efforts in rescuing fellow crewmen after the sinking of his boat, the P.T .109. |
