Today, Dominica has become known as the "Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean" and boasts a 90% success rate in spottting whales of dolphins during a whale watching excursion. Sperm Whales can be see year round. One reason is that Dominica has a unique underwater terrain - very close to the coast the seascape drops off thousands of feet deep, providing nutrients foe whales to fee on which are not normally found so near to shore. The Social behaviour of Sperm Whales can be viewed first hand - mating, calving ,and tending to their your in small gorups. Other Whales who frequent carribbiean shores include: Pilot, Pygmy Sperm, False Killer, Dwarf Sperm, Melon-Headed and Arca. Whale watching is a year-round activity in Dominica. Various species of dolphin are plentiful in the carribbean's crystal blue waters. Spotted, Spinner, aFraser and Risso's dolphin can be see frolicking along Dominica's coastline thorughout the year. |
