From: MGOTO@indiana.edu (Masako Goto) Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 16:58:01 -0500 (EST) Subject: USS CHESAPEAKE: Lt. Anne Murray Reports for Duty
SD 90224.1937 (GMT) ---------------------------- SB DELTA: CINCGREEN's Office ---------------------------- Feeling as though she were a hologram, Anne nodded to the Lieutenant at the desk, who looked back at her without seeming to *see* her, and walked out into the hallway. It was odd, she reflected, to go from being the subject of someone's obsession (albeit a negative one) to being close to a non-entity, all within 48 hours. -------------- USS CHESAPEAKE -------------- The Ensign stood casually at the airlock. He seemed to be completely unaware of his relative importance, cheerfully waving in crewmen without so much as a "permission granted." Of course, it all changed when he spotted her new pip. He miraculously grew taller by about six inches, his smile became fixed, and his posture was suddenly ramrod straight. Anne looked at him with a mixture of puzzlement and disgust. What was it about her rank that seemed to turn off every Ensign she met? Was a Lieutenant so formidable? She had never been intimidated by superior officers; she treated them with the same cool respect with which she treated everyone. She fought an urge to roll her eyes. They just didn't make Ensigns the way they used to. "Permission to come aboard," she snapped at the young man, showing him her PADD. The Ensign made a show of reading every word on the device. "Permission granted, sir," he said. No wave accompanied his remark; and, as she stepped into her new home, Anne felt curiously disappointed by the fact. The Captain wasn't hard to locate. Anne waited until the CO was ready to turn from whatever work she was doing at the moment, then snapped to attention in front of her. "Murray, Anne Sanders, Lieutenant, reporting for duty, Sir!" she said, her severe visage looking more Vulcan than ever. Respectfully submitted, Masako Goto Lt. Anne Murray, Ph.D. CSciO USS CHESAPEAKE, NCC-31813 *NRPG* Amy: Here's Murray... I never have figured out how to report to COs, so I figured the easiest way would be to get her in the way. My apologies if the Captain was guarding the entrance herself... Also, do we have any sort of shipboard dating convention yet? Jari: I wasn't sure if you wanted the CC or not; please let me know if you don't want to receive future CCs and I'll take you off the list. All: Just FYI, Murray's attitudes regarding Ensigns certainly do not mirror my own... she's gotten used to the nearly chummy atmosphere in her department on her previous ship (she used to call the CSciO by his first name), so she naturally bristles when people treat her differently based on her rank. Okay, end of spiel.
