SD 90305.2113 (GMT) ------------- Science Lab 2 ------------- MD 1.2205 Anne walked into the newly set up Mathematics and Logic Division with an air of exuberant confidence she was far from feeling. She had the distinct impression that she had made a complete idiot of herself in front of a majority of the Senior Officers. She shrugged. She supposed that an idiot would be more easily accommodated than a psychotic. "Good evening, Lieutenant," said Serak, mysteriously appearing, it seemed, out of nowhere. "I trust that the laboratory is set up to your liking, sir?" "Ye-es, i suppose so, Mr. Serak." Anne looked around at the lab, generic computer terminals sitting in clusters of fours. "I see you kept the bunsen burners," she commented. "Yes, sir... we're having them taken out tomorrow morning..." "Keep them, Mr. Serak." She fixed him with one of her commanding looks. "I want you to keep the bunsen burners in here. I want you to remember," she explained clearly, "what Department you are serving." She looked around at the large laboratory. She went down a corridor leading from it to the four offices in the suite, then strolled back to the laboratory. Serak was still sitting at his console, but his eyes followed her every movement. "Mr. Serak," said Anne, finally stopping by the Vulcan's console, "I want your department to look into programming the replicators to produce more... *texturally acceptable* food. Some of the protein sources are especially... tough." To ask a vegeterian to cook up better meat was no easy feat. "Sir," said Serak, his expression somber, "I fail to see what possible significance this assignment has..." Anne held up her hand. "You volunteered for this division, Mr. Serak," she reminded him, "and you did so because you wanted to use logic in everyday life. Well, now you have the perfect opportunity." She planted her full gaze on him for five full seconds before heading for the door. "See that you and your staff use your logic to come up with a satisfacory solution by 1500 hours tomorrow, Mr. Serak," she added vver her shoulder as she went out. ---------------------------------------------------- Computer and Intelligence Sciences Division Main Lab ---------------------------------------------------- MD 1.2215 "Mr. Cassidy," said Anne, recognizing the young man from his hologram in his file, "please come with me. I want to talk with you." "Y-yes, sir." Still shook up, it seemed. Cassidy was one of the younger cadets, only seventeen. He shuffled forward slowly. "Go on, Dar," encouraged Alexei Prokofiev, three years his senior. "She's not going to bite, y'know." "Don't be so sure about that, Mr. Prokofiev," commented Anne, waiting rather impatiently for Cassidy to gather up his PADDs. She led the young man to one of the offices in the suite. "Please sit down," she said, more an order than an invitation. Cassidy perched at the end of the chair. Anne sat down at the desk across from him. She needed to let him know that she was approachable. "Mr. Cassidy," she said very quietly, "what is the proper procedure for conducting turbolift voice input system diagnostics?" "I -- I don't know, sir," confessed Cassidy, his face flushing. "I thought as much," said Anne softly. "You just wanted something to do, I take it," she offered. The cadet nodded gratefully. She sighed to herself. It was so hard to scold someone who meant well, especially now, when she was so painfully aware of how aggressive she could be without even trying. "Mr. Cassidy," said Anne, still quietly, "there is one thing you must learn and memorize before you go back into the laboratory, and it is this: *always* get clearance from your superior officer first. Always. There are only two occasions when you do not do that. One is during an imminent all-system failure alert and the other is when all of your superior officers are... incapacitated. Do you get my meaning, Mr. Cassidy?" Cassidy nodded dumbly. "Say it in your own words, Mr. Cassidy." "I'm not supposed to run any diagnostics without authorization unless the computer's about to blow or when everybody above me in the Science chain of command is dead." "Yes," said Anne, pleased by the prompt reply. "That is entirely correct." She paused. "It is also customary," she said, her tone resuming its soft timbre, "to warn the potential users of the system being tested. In such a place as this, where every little thing seems to be controlled by computers, it is vitally important to know when the computer systems are working and when they're not." Cassidy nodded, again dumbly. "All right," said Anne, standing up. "It's late, and you've had an eventful evening. Go get some rest, and I'll see you in the morning. And, Mr. Cassidy..." "Yes, sir?" "*Please* don't test the turbolifts until I give you my mark." "Aye, sir." Anne left the laboratory with a sense of well-being. The kids could be too much sometimes, she reflected. They could run unauthorized diagnostics, break an oxygen dispenser, get their arm broken, do all sorts of unmentioned and unmentionable things... but she loved them so much. She only hoped that they knew that, too. ----------------- Murray's quarters ----------------- MD 1.2230said the computer when Anne asked for messages. "Display index," said Anne automatically. One from Serak announcing move, another from Ensign Keyrin telling her not to sweat the questions, a short message from Fielding detailing the doings of the Beta shift science officers, and a message from Cassidy expressing his sincere apologies for conducting the turbolift diagnostics at such an inopportune time. "Murray to Cadet Daryll Cassidy's quarters," said Anne. said a young man, appearing in front of the view screen. It wasn't Cassidy, but he looked somewhat familiar. Suddenly, Anne felt a chill. It was none other than Ben Kirko. "Oh, good evening, Mr. Kirko," said Anne, trying not to sound nervous. "How are you?" replied Kirko. "I must have the wrong room, I'm sorry," said Anne. "I was calling Daryll Cassidy..." said Kirko. "Thank you, Mr. Kirko," said Anne. "Please let him know -- or have his roommate inform him -- that I called and that I received his message. Please let him know... that it's all right." Kirko was wise enough not to question the order, Anne noticed. "You take care of yourself, Mr. Kirko," said Anne. "Be sure you go to those combat sessions." promised Kirko. "Good night, Mr. Kirko." She looked again at the message index after Kirko had disappeared from the view screen and made a terrible face. That pesky message that she had tried to delete earlier was back; only, this time, it wasn't n-1, it was n-5. How could that be? Then she nodded in sudden realization. Of course, a random order scrambling program. She used to use them on her more devious students to make sure that they wouldn't learn to avoid a particular message by ignoring the message ID number. "Very funny, computer. I'm just not in the mood right now," she said, pushing her chair back under her desk. "I've made enough trouble for myself already, thank you very much. Good night, computer." Anne narrowed her eyes, hoping that Cassidy wasn't running a diagnostic on the personal terminals now. The lights dimmed. Respectfully submitted, Masako Goto Lt. Anne Murray, Ph.D. CSciO USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813 *NRPG* All: Hi, just tying up some loose ends here before I forgot to stop by at the science lab... Amy, Melvin, Takako: You're not off the hook yet... I am a strong believer in Backposts for a Good Cause! Chris, Lynnaea: I was just re-reading some of my previous posts, and I have to say this -- okay, I lied. Psychometric measurements *can* hurt... but maybe not *physically.* James: Thanks for the cool line! :) I don't know if she'll ever go see your character, :< but I enjoy reading your posts! :) :) Do I want to know *which* Barney music you were referring to? About Timeline: Yup, you guessed it, this was another excuse for writing this post! It's timeline update time again, and I wanted to let you know that I've inserted a couple of conjectured times. 1. Dinner dispersion; this is based on James's post in which the Counselor is back in her quarters by 2206. I rounded the end of dinner to 2200. 2. Arrival of officers at the dinner: I noted who appeared first in the room; the rest followed in chronological order. Again, time is merely conjecture. I had Ledoux report five minutes after most everyone else because shy people who don't like social functions are not likely to arrive very early. 3. Arrival of Keyrin and Murray: sorry, Lynnaea, even though Keyrin told Murray to go on ahead in, she decided to wait for her outside in the corridor. It worked better with Amy's post to move it to around 2110. I hope you don't mind. 4. Dinner discussions: this is mostly based on James's post. Amy, I am assuming that our conversation takes place after your conversation with Keyrin and Tats-Marush is done. Question, everybody: is this supposed to be a sit-down dinner? Because if it is, I'm going to have to figure out how in the world Ledoux and Murray escape to a nice little corner of the room without anyone's noticing. 5. The timeline is starting to look like a sort of benign monster. If anyone wants me to post each characters' timeline separately from time to time, please let me know and I'll do that. -------------------------------------------------------- USS CHESAPEAKE Timeline v. 1.3 (last updated 90305.2213) -------------------------------------------------------- MD 01.0700 CAPT Bell reports to CINCGREEN MD 01.0715 CDR Brennan reports to CINCGREEN MD 01.0730 Bell and Brennan board CHESAPEAKE MD 01.0745 LCDR th'Tellan reports to CINCGREEN MD 01.0800 LT Murray reports to CINCGREEN MD 01.0845 LT Murray reports to CAPT Bell in Ready Room MD 01.0900 Murray inspects Science Department MD 01.0915 ENS Keyrin reports to CINCGREEN LT(jg) DawnFire to-Ennien boards CHESAPEAKE MD 01.0930 Bell takes care of business in Ready Room Brennan on the Bridge LT(jg) DawnFire to-Ennien inspects quarters Murray expounds on Meaning of Modern Science in SOC MD 01.0935 Bell and Brennan speak in Ready Room MD 01.0945 Keyrin boards CHESAPEAKE MD 01.1000 LCDR Ledoux reports to CINCGREEN MD 01.1015 ENS Keyrin reports to CDR Brennan on Bridge MD 01.1030 Keyrin settles into her quarters Ledoux still on DELTA, feeling depressed MD 01.1100 Ledoux boards CHESAPEAKE MD 01.1130 Ledoux inspects quarters, reads mail Murray has lunch with her department's Resource Manager MD 01.1200 Ledoux heads toward Bridge Tats-Marush heads for CHESAPEAKE MD 01.1205 Tats-Marush beams aboard CHESAPEAKE Tats-Marush inspects quarters, reads mail MD 01.1210 LCDR Ledoux reports to CDR Brennan on the Bridge MD 01.1220 Ledoux heads toward sickbay MD 01.1230 Murray holds Science Department Meeting MD 01.1240 Ledoux settles into her office, has another crying spell MD 01.1300 Keyrin holds Security/Tactical Department Meeting (in Conference Room 3A) MD 01.1315 LT(jg) Tats-Marush reports to CDR Brennan in XO's office MD 01.1330 Brennan and Tats-Marush's discussion draws to a close MD 01.1400 Brennan visits the Science Department MD 01.1415 Brennan reads messages, calls twin at ALPHA in quarters MD 01.1445 Murray chats with aCSciO in her office MD 01.1500 Keyrin adjourns SEC/TAC meeting aCSciO contacts Murray in her quarters about PS Lab MD 01.1505 Ledoux takes care of things in her quarters MD 01.1510 Murray arrives on Deck 17 MD 01.1515 Murray sends injured crewman to Sickbay aCMO tends to crewman in Sickbay th'Tellan boards CHESAPEAKE MD 01.1530 Murray and aCSciO speak in her office MD 01.1545 Murray and aCSciO meet with Keyrin in the CSO's office MD 01.1550 th'Tellan checks mail in quarters MD 01.1555 Keyrin and Murray head for Deck 6 MD 01.1600 Murray settles into quarters MD 01.1630 Keyrin reads mail in quarters, calls mother Murray reads mail (in quarters) MD 01.1645 Murray visits injured crewman in Sickbay MD 01.1700 th'Tellan holds OPS department meeting in conference room MD 01.1730 Ledoux checks in with sickbay again, looks over Kirko MD 01.1830 Tats-Marush looks over Ens.
