Anne woke up rather suddenly, her eyes snapping open. She
managed to find the timepiece next to her bed without knocking over any
of the ten objects that cluttered her night table.
2345. How amusing, she thought. She hadn't slept for much
over an hour, and she was up already. It must be the excitement of
starting duty on a new ship. She never seemed to be in need of sleep
when she actually had time for it.
Still, she was up; and Anne was not one to let by an
opportunity when it knocked at her door. She quickly took a shower and
got dressed, still feeling as chipper as ever.
Now, what could she *do* until 0800? She couldn't report to
any of the other officers; they should be asleep by now. She shrugged.
Messages were always waiting; and, now that she thought of it, there
was PADD work to be done.

Finally, Anne stored the last of the personnel files. She had
gone over them meticulously but quickly, sizing up each individual in
her department, weighing strengths and weaknesses, getting a feel for
them. She paid attention especially to their working hours, entering
them into a chart on the terminal screen.
After she was done with the files, she gazed at the large
chart. She thought deeply for a couple of minutes, then checked over
the messages from Fielding. Yes, the second department meeting had
taken place, as she had ordered, at 1700. She fairly skipped out the
door of her quarters. She was feeling extremely happy for the first
time in hours.

Anne was still in a good humor when she walked into the
laboratory. She had remembered, just in time, that both the MLD and
the CISD would have their chairmen on call, which usually meant that
they would be occupying their respective main laboratories; and, for
this errand, she needed privacy. She hoped that no one had seen her
walk in here.
It would, of course, be a lot harder to do it from the Physical
Sciences Division computer console; but she was used to making do with
second-best situations. The program would execute correctly; and so
long as it did all right, she wouldn't have any complaints.
"Computer," she said softly, looking over her shoulder from
time to time, "access Math and Logic Auxiliary System Beta."

"Identify Murray, Anne Sanders, number H-1997-AMD-0401."

	"Computer, execute Program Murray-Delta-Sci-2."

	"Science 1, science 2, science 3, science 4, 1000."

The computer beeped a couple of times in a polite sort of way,
then the screen flickered back to its usual bland appearance.
Anne nodded, satisfied. She had done what she needed to do.

Anne had known better than to suggest that Serak needn't report
in the mornings if he didn't feel like it; she knew that Vulcans were
prone to overworking, overachieving, and in general making others in
their department look like lazy bums. Now, the young Vulcan sat at his
console, looking for all the world as though he'd had a nice long
night's sleep.
Anne suspected that the Vulcan had spent a major chunk of the
late-night/early-morning hours looking over personnel files, but she
wasn't about to intrude on his privacy. Instead, she watched him out
of the corner of her eye. It was almost time...
	Suddenly, Serak whirled around.
"Sir," he said, his expression and voice as calm and collected
as ever, "there appears to be mechanical malfunctions in the Biological
Sciences Division."
	"Which lab?"
Serak told her, adding that he couldn't determine the cause of
malfunction and, indeed, what exactly was malfunctioning.
"Well, let's not waste any time, Mr. Serak," said Anne briskly.
She took off for the Bio division with admirable speed, especially
considering the fact that she knew what was happening.
The computer in the PSD had gone on strike.
Respectfully submitted,

I know, I know, it doesn't *do* anything, but Anne's always cooking up
something or other...
Just so nobody gets scared, this is a test of the Science Department
Emergency Procedure. No big damage... or, most probably, no little
ones, either. But it should keep the Science kids happy... and, who
knows, maybe some of the more... *innocent* cadets will call on
Security or Sickbay... (Chris? Lynnaea? Any ideas?)
