"It seems, sir, that the students in your
department are not the only people needing some...
reminders of proper protocol," suggested Ensign Sereh,
her face expressionless.
"What do you mean, Ensign?" asked Anne, trying
to make her face just as expressionless.
"I mean, sir, that your Researchers don't seem
to have a clear idea of their responsibilities and
authority. They not only failed to respond correctly
to an emergency situation yesterday; they also failed
to supervise the students' activities sufficiently,
allowing them to run unauthorized tests."
"Oh, yes. That." *You needn't have brought it
up so matter-of-factly,* Anne added to herself. The
impromptu turbolift diagnostic test of two days earlier
still upset her.
"Given that fact, and the fact that they still
failed to respond correctly after a staff meeting that
night, suggest that your staff is rather... naturally
competency-challenged."
"That's one way of putting it," muttered Anne.
"What do you suggest, Ensign Sereh?" she asked. "I
obviously haven't done too good a job with them so far."
"I suggest that you hold another meeting
yourself," said Ensign Sereh. "A separate one for
each division. You may be well-advised to hold a
separate meeting for Researchers and students, since
their needs differ somewhat."
"Ensign Sereh," said Anne, her hands clenching
themselves into fists, "you are talking about eight
meetings. I don't have *time* for eight meetings if
I want to do a decent job each time."
	Ensign Sereh nodded curtly.
"You need hold only six," she said patiently,
"since the Mathematics and Logic Division seems capable
of handling any emergency."
That figures, thought Anne. The only thing
wrong they'd done was to move into the wrong lab.
"All right, Ensign Sereh," she said, standing
up. "Thank you for your assistance. And, since you
seem to be doing such an efficient job, perhaps you can
draw up a schedule for the meetings."
"Yes, sir," said the Ensign. She stood in front
of Anne's desk, not moving.
Anne looked up in surprise, then realized that
she hadn't dismissed her.
"Oh. That will be all, Ensign Sereh."
Ensign Sereh nodded, turned sharply, and left
the office. Anne shrugged, then turned to some new
status reports that had come in from the MLD.
Respectfully submitted,
Masako Goto
Lt. Anne Murray, Ph.D.
