From: Takako NagumoDate: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 23:49:54 -0500 Subject: USS CHESAPEAKE: Dinner in Ten-Forward
SD 90319.2130 EST MD 3.1900 Scene: Brennan's Quarters The day was finally winding down. Brennan walked into his quarters and collapsed onto the couch. The refitted sofa was much more comfortable -- there was a little more give to it. The day had not begun in a promising way, certainly. Daniel believed himself a pretty reasonable man, but who liked being woken up at 0100 hours with blaring sirens? No one he knew. And the lecture he had to give her afterwards had been no picnic, either. He pulled over the pile of PADDs he had left earlier -- the crew biofiles. He was trying to read them a little by little, to let the information sink in. He pulled out the one with Aelyria Keyrin's jacket. He knew she had the potential to be an outstanding officer. It was all there. She just needed guidance, gentle reminders... and make sure she doesn't use explosives in unannounced drills. His talk with Lieutenant Murray was not much better for him. He was beginning to realize that handling personnel issues may be the most difficult part of being the Exec. Ah, well. Perhaps the diplomatic experience he had would be more useful than he thought. He was quite happy that his physical was over. Not that he minded Catherine Ledoux's company; she seemed a shy but friendly person. But like any officer, he liked to think that he took care of himself reasonably well, and who wanted to spend time in Sickbay when one could be doing so many other things? Ah, well. He put those thoughts aside. His work day was over. He shoved himself off the couch and walked into the bedroom. He quickly changed out of his uniform into more casual clothes. As he pulled his shirt on over his head, he heard something growl, and realized that it was his stomach. "Dinner time, eh?" he asked, looking down. Alone? Or... "Computer, locate Doctor Ledoux." [Doctor Ledoux is in her quarters.] He tapped his commbadge. "Brennan to Ledoux." There was a slight delay in the response."Doctor, have you eaten yet? I was just heading down to Ten- Forward, and I would certainly enjoy your company." "It's quite all right if you don't want to. I'm sure you're quite worn out from the day." <... Thank you for the invitation, Commander.> "You're welcome. Remember this invitation is always open," he reassured her. "Brennan out." He decided that he was indeed very hungry, and proceeded to Ten- Forward and dinner. * * * * * He sat in one of the booths by the window, looking out into all of infinite space. As he sipped his bitter -- his only concession to his long day -- his thoughts floated, unbidden, back to the ADDISON, and Joanne. He had told himself that it was not meant to be. She was the best friend that any person could want, and had proven a valuable mentor to him. Perhaps it was that that had precipitated his feelings for her -- that sense of admiration and infatuation with an authority figure. No, it couldn't've been. Yes, he admired her, yes, he was infatuated with her, but.... He heard footsteps approaching. Thinking it was the waiter with his food, he spoke absentmindedly into the air. "Thank you, Charlie...." He turned to see Catherine Ledoux standing by his table. Respectfully Submitted, Takako Nagumo, CDR Daniel J.
