With Derek taking the Authority Systems refresher course, Anne
was free to meet with Lt (jg) Cassandra Stewart. She was getting rather
worried about her Iotian crew.
"Six of them, at least," said Anne to the older woman earnestly.
"I need to make sure they're all getting the drills that they need. I
mean, government-sponsored fitness programs are wonderful things, but
there is something to be said for variable intervals of reinforcement."
"True," said the Security officer accommodatingly. Her eyes
sparkled. "Here's what I have down for your Iotian crew; see if you like
it." She proferred a PADD.
Anne looked over the schedule critically.
"A-ha," she said finally. "Start out with drills practically
every day, then work your way down to none at all? That's pretty neat...
unfortunately, that will take a lot of time."
"Old habits die hard, you know," said the Australian
matter-of-factly. "It's a shame their government didn't foresee this
problem in their campaign to build well-trained adults."
"The Iotian government," remarked Anne, "is hardly known for its
long-range views. Their visual acuity of the future is measured at
something approaching 20/1000 years. What we would consider important
1000 years in advance, they consider important 20 years in advance... or,
at least, that was the latest estimate."
"Somehow," said Lt(jg) Stewart, "I was given to understand that
they were supposed to be a bright and imitative people." She picked up
her PADD. "I haven't seen much evidence of it yet."
"I suppose they are bright and imitative in their own way," said
Anne, "but I haven't seen any evidence of those qualities, either... oh,
except the imitative part... I believe one of the Physical Sciences
students was imitating another student's ill-fated attempt to use the
oxygen dispenser when the apparatus began to leak."
"You do seem to have your share of strangely ill-prepared
students, Lieutenant," commented Lt(jg) Stewart, her expression puzzled.
"Where in the world did you find them?"
"I didn't find them," countered Anne. "I just work here. I
guess Karen Decker's the one in charge of the students, and I'm sure I
have no idea *how* the staff made it through basic training. Still,
they're here now... and I'm going to whip them into shape before we take
off from DELTA if it kills me."
"That it might, Lieutenant Murray," commented Lt(jg) Stewart. "I
know my main concern is supposed to be with your Iotians, but I couldn't
help noticing that the rest of your staff is rather wanting in skills as
well. Aside from which... oh, that reminds me, Lieutenant. I was
thinking that *you* might be a good 'audience' for the Iotians in one of
their drills."
	"Oh?"
"I'm thinking that we might be able to combine their combat
drills with department protocol review. Then you'll have *some* staff on
hand while the others are busy with the reviews."
"That's a thought." Anne hadn't, to be honest, thought out the
plan very carefully. Lt(jg) Stewart's suggestion was sound. "All right,
let's do that." She took out a PADD from her desk. "Let's see about
those schedules..."
Respectfully submitted,

Lt. Anne Murray, Ph.D.

USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813

What can I say? I like those Iotians. :)
This, by the way, brings us to another round 10 figure, so I will
be sending out the timeline soon-ly. :)
I think this might actually be our 100th post. :)
Lynnaea: Thanks for the use of your NPC... I hope I didn't misplay her
         too much.

Chris: Still awaiting your views on the piano issue...
Melvin: I think I'll send the dinner post if you don't do so by tomorrow;
with the billets all filled, I suspect we might be heading out
soon... hope the 2O is having a relatively calm day...
Takako: I have an updated version of the Science Dep. roster... it's not
100% complete yet -- 8 student slots in Comp. Sci. -- but it has the
shift revisions and such. If you want me to send it, please let me
know. BTW, if Anne's hanging around the Science Department
during off-hours, does she have to be in uniform?

Thought for the day: Use your brain. It works.
