Anne checked over the crew assignments, then made some notations
on her PADD. She paused by her assistant CSciO's office, decided that
she had bothered Fielding enough for one hour, and headed for Lieutenant
Suvok's office.
"Any news regarding research coordination, Suvok?" she asked,
sticking her head in through the open door.
"No, sir," replied the Vulcan calmly, as though rather excitable
superior officers barged into his office unannounced every day.
"Great." Anne made another notation. "Please get to it, Mr.
Suvok," she told him briskly. "I was going to ask you to proctor the
review exams today, but I'll have someone else do it. Please take care
of the research coordination detail immediately."
"Yes, sir," said Suvok, tactfully neglecting to mention the
recent upheavals throughout the Science Department the past several
days. "I shall see to it presently."
"*Now*, Mr. Suvok!" called Anne, already disappearing into Karen
Decker's room.
"Yes, sir," said Suvok into the empty space where Anne had been.
"Karen!" Anne nearly collided with the Resource Manager. "We
need to *talk*." She all but pushed the woman into her office. Decker
nearly fell, but regained her balance.
"What is the matter with you?" she demanded. She sounded
uncommonly disagreeable. Perhaps she needed red-hot Cheerios to keep her
hapy... "You nearly knock me down in my own office, you just *push*
yourself in here... what is going *on*, Anne? You've been edgy all
afternoon yesterday, and now this...!"
"Where did you *find* those students of ours, Karen?" demanded
Anne. She was quite calm about it, considering the fact that all the
students had somehow managed to create problems all over her department.
"Find?" inquired Decker, sounding only slightly happier. "I
didn't 'find' them anywhere, Anne. They came with their teachers. My
only connection with them is that... um..."
"Yes, Karen, you had to *approve* them," retorted Anne. "Is all
that red pepper making you totally incapable of making sound decisions?"
"O-ho, Miss Science Officer, let's not get *personal*," said
Decker. "My eating habits have nothing to do with my professional life.
Meaanwhile I might ask you about your conduct yesterday afternoon..."
"Never mind, Karen," said Anne quickly. "Just... just proctor
the review exams, will you please? Suvok has to get some research
coordination stuff done."
"Sure, fine with me," said Decker, eyeing Anne suspiciously.
"Just where is this exam going to be?"
"Here." Anne tossed her a PADD. "Staff exams will be in their
respective Division HQs, and the chairman can see to that. I want you to
proctor the student exam, which will be taking place in the Main
Administrative Center. Out of respect for your need for space and quiet,
I will be vacating my office until the exams are over."
"Anne!" Decker looked distraught. "You're not going to leave me
alone with those kids, are you?"
"Hey, I'm only the Chief Science Officer," said Anne, gathering
up her PADDs. "I got things to do."
"Um, Anne..." Decker held out her hand. "That top PADD is mine."
"Correction: *MINE*," said Anne. "It's time I learned how my
students operate. No better way than seeing school performance
comments. Thanks for the info..."
"*ANNE*!" Decker reached for the PADD. "That's confidential
information you've got there! Don't you believe in protocol?"
"Most of the time I do," said Anne, no longer teasing. "However,
this department has so many klutzy students that I need to get a handle
on *what* is going on. These are going to help me, which will, in turn,
help me deal with their respective weak spots and mold them into caapable
scientists. So... see you later, Karen."
As Anne rounded the corner, she heard something that sounded
suspiciously like an outraged shriek from the general direction of Karen
Decker's office. She was unconcerned. Decker would regain her
composure, she was sure, after a bowl of enhanced cereal.
Respectfully submitted,

CSciO
USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813

All right, this post just sort of wrote itself. I don't know what to say
except that she'll soon be hanging around the rest of the Science
Departments looking for things to do.
