Anne showed the Chief Security Officer into the living area of
her quarters. She looked over at her and asked if she would care for
something to drink.
        "Cappucino, please... extra cream."
Getting herself a half-frozen lime soda and Keyrin's cappucino, Anne
approached her bookshelf. She looked over the titles quickly before finding
the one she wanted.
"Here it is," she said to Ensign Keyrin, taking out the box and
pulling up a second chair to her desk. She sat down and waited for the
security officer to sit down before opening the box. "This is called the
Dennis-Schuster Series. It has several components, but..." she rummaged
around, pulling out a thick book. "This is the one I used that first
night," she concluded, handing over the book to Ensign Keyrin.
Aelyria perused the book with interest. The book was divided into three
sections; the first contained the actual series questions themselves,
classified into different diagnostic categories. Some assessed factual
knowledge, others assessed moral standards. There were some that gauged the
subject's attitudes.
The second section contained possible answers and variations,
noting how each would be scored. There were sheets of paper with colored
dots folded between some of the pages. Ensign Keyrin held one such paper
up and raised a questioning eyebrow at Anne.
"Those are the codings for some of the people I've tested,"
explained Anne, warming to her favorite topic. "The colors indicate
which section I should read, and the order shows when I tested them."
Ensign Keyrin noted that there were five dots on the final line,
all different colors.
"How are these colors determined?" asked the security officer.
"They're specified here," said Anne, taking out a booklet of
medium length. "And here are the colored markers that go with it." She
opened the book and showed Ensign Keyrin the rows of colored circles.
"I'm not too fond of my personality classification color, myself," she
confided with a smile. "It's the rather bland color of white." She
examined the colors critically. "I seem to recall that you were red."
She looked at the paper with the dots again. "Yes," she concluded.
Definitely red."
        "What does red mean?"
"Red. Let's see." Anne turned the pages of the booklet in her
hand. She found the page, skimmed it, nodded. "General characteristics
include: self-confidence, strong leadership skills, rather aggressive
nature, ability to cope with difficult situations, very competitive."
She paused, seeming to think over some mental notes she had made.
She addressed her comments to the book, but it waas obvious that she was
really speaking to Keyrin.
"You also have a bit of an overachieving complex, the drive to
succeed and to give more than your best for your department. You are also
quite bitter about some aspects of your life, and there are subjects to
which you react with hatred, almost violence." She looked up and
stopped. "I... I'm sorry, Aelyria," she said softly, unsure what else to
say. Everything she had said was true, but whether or not the owner of
those characteristics had wanted to hear them was another story.
Aelyria was looking away, staring off into the corner, her
expression devoid of feeling. After a moment, her reverie was broken and
she stood, handing the book back to Anne. "Thank you. I had better be
going."
Anne followed her to the door, a pained expression on her face.
"Will I see you soon?"
Keyrin paused. "I suppose," she replied, before walking off, a
lost expression on her face.

Respectfully submitted,
