Anne glared at the floor in front of her for just a few seconds.
She looked up briefly at the Ensign sitting across from her, then decided
to study the walls for a while.
"You know," said Darling, who had just recently woken up in a
strange Ensign's room and was still trying to figure out just *what* she
thought of the rather enigmatic and bumbling Flight Control Officer, "it
just might help things along if you actually told me what happened."
"Yes, of course," returned Anne. She bit her lip in thought and
concentration. Now, she told herself. *Now* would be the perfect time
for her Vulcan facade to come into play. So where was it? "Maybe," she
said slowly, "I should come back some other time?"
"I've got time," replied Darling. "We might as well get it over
with while we're not bogged down with mission stuff."
Anne considered this for a second. Then she sighed, distancing
herself from what she was saying to the security officer.
"It's been almost four months now," she said, her black eyes
focusing on the wall behind Ensign Darling. "First of December..."

SD: 90322.0800
From: LT Anne Sanders Murray, Ph.D.
Chief Science Officer, USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813
To: CAPT Amanda Bell
Commanding Officer, USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813
LCDR Daniel Justin Brennan
Executive Officer, USS CHESAPEAKE NCC-31813
Re: Statement, regarding professional misconduct of an officer aboard the
USS BELLEROPHON, NCC-7501
I, Lieutenant Anne Murray, assigned as the Chief Science
Officer aboard the USS CHESAPEAKE NCC 31813, do swear to the following
testimony.
On SD 81130.1900, I received a notice from the Ship's Counselor, LCDR
Kevin Mallory, ordering me to report to his office the following morning
for a brief interview.
The notice itself caused no real alarm, as the Counselor sent such
notices to me at regular intervals, usually every four weeks or so (see
Appendix A).
As ordered, I reported to the Counselor's Office on SD 81201.0900 and was
met by LCDR Mallory. He ushered me into his office and began to question
me regarding certain topics (see Appendix B), after five minutes of
which he then stated that he was dissatisfied with the progress I was making
in counseling and suggested that "we try something different."
He approached me and began to fondle my hair, ignoring my requests to
desist. He suggested that we disrobe, becoming quite annoyed when I
questioned the advisability of such a course of action. He gripped my
shoulders and forced me to go to the adjoining room with him, where he
proceeded to engage me in nonconsensual sexual activity (see Appendix C).
The details of my encounters with LCDR Mallory, as well as explicit
details of the incident in question, are to be found in the appendices.
I swear that the above statements are true under the pains and penalites
of perjury.
Respectfully submitted,
LT Anne Sanders Murray
(assisted by ENS Clarissa Darling, Security Division, USS CHESAPEAKE)

"Do you want a glass of water or something, Lieutenant?" asked
Ensign Darling helpfully. She looked at the Science officer with a touch
of concern; the latter had lost all semblance of humanity, even her voice
taking on a sort of unnatural, nonemotional tone.
"No. Thank you." Anne got up slowly, her head spinning slightly.
She held out her hand and leaned on the wall for support. "I will be
fine, Mr. Darling... and thank you for your assistance with... this."
"Not a problem, Lieutenant," said Ensign Darling, giving her a
smile of... encouragement? Anne wasn't sure... and she didn't really
care, at this point. She wanted to vanish from the woman's sight as soon
as possible, to be perfectly honest. One didn't speak of such things so
candidly without some risk... and Anne was not a good risk-taker; at
least, not when it came to her experiences with Mallory.
Anne quickly made her way to her office. She needed something to
take her mind off things, and she might as well begin with her place of
employment. There was work to be done.
As she sat down in her chair, Anne fought down a strong urge to
be violently ill. She didn't have time for that now. She tried to
operate her computer console to retrieve her messages, but she couldn't
seem to form the words. After a minute of fruitless shuffling of PADDs
and data chips, Anne put her head down in her hands. So much work to do,
and she couldn't even read her messages.
"Anne? Heard about our bunny situation?" asked the familiar
voice of Derek Fielding at the door. "What's the matter?" he added,
noticing her posture.
"What bunny situation?" asked Anne a bit sharply, completely baffled
and a bit irritated. Of all the things to bring up now...! "Karen's rabbit?"
"You haven't heard about it?" asked Derek, approaching the desk.
The 'Notorious Bunny Incident' was, he had assumed, common knowledge in
the Science Department by now. He studied Anne's face with some
concern. "I'll brief you later... it's been resolved. What's wrong?" he
asked again.
"Nothing," said Anne, not quite managing a smile. "Everything is
just fine. Please shut the door on your way out... I have lots of work
to do this morning, and I'd rather not be disturbed."
"Um... okay." Fielding shrugged. "You know that if you need to
talk, or anything..."
"I'm *fine*, Derek!" snapped Anne, her voice losing some of its
measured calm.
"Yes, sir." Fielding decided that this would be a good time to
make a hasty exit and left the office, shutting the door quietly behind him.

"So what did she *say*?" asked Decker nervously. She still felt
responsible for the whole rabbit mess when, in fact, only the odd Ensign
who had tried to make a pass at her was to blame.
"She didn't say *anything*," said Fielding. "She didn't even
*know* about it, from the looks of it. She's in one of her moods. *Again*."
"Does she ever get *out* of them?" asked Decker innocently.
"Probably not," sighed Fielding. "All we've ever seen of her is
basically a variation on a theme: total and utter emotional meltdown." He
banged Decker's desk with his fist in frustration. "I've tried to talk
to her, and she wouldn't let me do that. I've tried to take over for
her, and the department fell apart. She's seen the Counselor, and she's
been crackers ever since. If she weren't such a good scientist, I'd
just..." He put his head down on Decker's desk.
"Kinda hard taking orders from a fruitcake, huh?" asked Decker in
a sympathetic tone of voice.
"You can say that," came the muffled reply. "What are we going
to do when the mission research starts getting heavy?" He lifted his head
and stared blankly at the wall. He paled a bit. "She's not going to
make it," he said. "Ergo, *we* are not going to make it."
"Y'think maybe the Captain will give her the ax?" asked Decker.
"Maybe," said Fielding. "I thought I'd never say this, but... it
might be best for all concerned if she *does*."

Amy, James, Takako: As Takako has already suggested to me over
e-mail: Let's Talk. :)
Melvin: We might have to wait a bit on developing the th'Tellan/Murray
mentoring relationship, depending on where this goes.
Lynnaea: Now you know why I had Mallory's bio. :)
Fabian: Hm, we'll see if she decides to *do* anything about the...
er... bunny situation sometime. :) Meanwhile, I hope that
I did Clarissa Darling justice. :)
Chris: Getting deeper into trouble now... ::shrug:: How's Catherine
doing these days? ;)
Naomi: Hope you're feeling better and that you're not *too* busy! :)
Now, credit where credit is due:
Thanks to D'Maris for her insights regarding legal and practical problems
and possible solutions precipitated by this chain of events. :)
Thanks to James for his advice concerning the writing of depositions; the
form I used was originally conceived by him. I changed only the
details as necessary. :)
Thanks to Takako for her insights regarding Murray's reactions and for
her comments and suggestions on my writing. :)
