Sereh picked up the knife and dropped it in the drawer. Upon
hearing the sound it made, her eyebrows shot up, but quickly lowered. "I
have. She isn't too happy about all of the curriculum changes, but she is
willing to support my plan in order to receive better facilities."
"And Lt Cmdr th'Tellan?"
"I haven't cleared it with him as of yet. However, I believe that
he will approve the plan as well."
<<New material>>
"You realize, of course," said Anne rather coldly, "that I am
not directly responsible for these students' education; it is the
perogative of their respective instructors." She fronwed to make her
point, then decided that it wasn't exactly Ensign Sereh's *fault* that
she didn't want to overhaul *anything* at this point.
"Of course, Murray," returned the junior Engineering officer.
"However, since you are the head of your department, you have a certain
amount of say in what the students are taught... and how. You *have*
managed to ban them from the laboratories; it should not be too difficult
to effect their return there and to implement safety procedure lessons."
"We *tried* that," Anne pointed out, not quite patiently. "We
have tried dumping them in head first, we have tried holding their hand,
and now they're totally banned from the Science Department... Nothing
Works, do you hear me? NOTHING WORKS! I think they'll be better off
taking correspondence courses in some other field. Maybe proofreading,
if their spelling is any better than their laboratory senses."
"Has it ever occurred to you, Murray, that you aren't making
this any easier for them?" asked Ensign Sereh, completely innocently.
"You assume that they are going to fail; ergo, they fail. If you
expect them to succeed, then perhaps they will have a chance to do so."
"Of course I thought of that," lied Anne. After all, she *had*
come onto the CHESAPEAKE expecting disorder from the students; that was
the way it had been on her previous ship. "And I thought I told you to
call me Anne."
"You did, Murray," said Ensign Sereh.
Anne stared at the self-proclaimed 74-year-old for a moment
without blinking, then shrugged. Vulcans, it seemed, weren't quite
as... straightforward as she had been beginning to believe. Not
this one, anyway.
<<Melvin wrote>>
"If there isn't any more you want to bring up, you're dismissed."
Sereh was about to leave, then stopped. "There was one more
thing. You may wish to study the inadequate soundproofing of these
doors." With that, she left.
<<New material>>
Anne stared at her door for a long moment. Well... yes, now
that she thought of it, what that insufferable Vulcan had said was
true. If it had been a good, soundproof door, she shouldn't have been
able to just *shout* for anyone to identify herself. She would have
to take that up with... oh, dear.
Her head began to ache in a rather annoying way as she realized
that she would have to swallow her pride and approach Commander th'Tellan
about getting some sound insulation for her door.
What would she tell him?
"Gimme a new insulation sheet, please." Yes, that would be
good for a start.
Respectfully submitted,
Masako Goto
Lt. Anne Murray, Ph.D.

Glad to hear it, um, Mr. T. As for Murray's writing abilities...
::smirk:: she didn't exactly breeze through school on the strength of
her writing... although I suppose the scientific community might have
found her writing interesting to a point...

Glad to know that Melvin is on his way back to Reality. It's been way
too quiet around here for way too long. Just so long as we don't have
to go chasing across half the width of a galaxy just so we could change
a couple of light bulbs...
With regard to Sereh: Riiiight. Thanks for the advice. ;) And yes, this
*will* explain a lot of things... I just hope that I didn't mangle Sereh
too badly.

Ah, I knew you were lurking around there *somewhere*.
Amy: Hope all is well with you.
Takako: How's that Master Roster coming along? ;)
Melvin: Hmmm... I would say that the relational temperature between
Murray and Sereh went down to about -20 C... it'll take
Something Unusual, I think, to raise it above freezing point...
and please don't take Anne's attitude toward Sereh and th'Tellan
personally... she's not been friendly with anyone in a while.
Lynnaea: How's Keyrin holding up these days? Hope she's doing well...
and hope you're getting through your classes all right!
Fabian: Has Oz been staying out of trouble recently? ;)
Chris: Hope all is well in New Jersey!
James: Well, I may have mentioned this before, but I *will* be
repeating two of my classes next year (I signed up for Stats
for next semester first thing this morning... with a *different*
professor... <G>). Am I still alive? Yes. Am I getting
depressed about it? Not yet... :)
Also, I am wondering... did Anne more or less get the
interpretation of the sociological report correct, or did you
intend something else? As of now, she's very sympathetic to
the Corellian society and its standards. Of course, what's on
paper isn't necessarily what's lived out by its denizens, so...
Naomi: Hope that you aren't too busy and that you're feeling well!
