Subject: USS CHESAPEAKE: Trying to keep busy

Lieutenant Commander Catherine Ledoux leaned back in her chair and smiled.
There was something to be said, after all, for a vacation. With nothing
else to do, the French Canadian was busy catching up on all the medical
journals and research articles that she had been wanting to read for *ages*.
Life, up until this point, had simply been far too busy for Catherine to
even skim through any of the interesting articles.
The previous night's unpleasantness was all but forgotten. While not adept
at excising unwanted thoughts from her mind, Catherine was enjoying herself
far too much to allow any negative thoughts to intrude upon her day of
relaxation. No, nothing was going to disturb the vet today.
Extending her hand, Catherine called up the series of articles that she
wanted to review. First off, she had nabbed the most current research on
cybernetics, a topic that had always interested the vet. In fact, her
senior thesis while studying veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph
had been on using cybernetic limbs for disabled raqcehorses.
Now, Catherine was interested in applying that knowledge to human cybernetic
implants.
Granted, she had an ulterior motive. Rich. The pilot's left arm was
comprised of a Romulan cybernetic implant sheathed in Rich's own flesh.
Catherine shuddered as she recalled the shoddy job that had been done.
Rihannsu medicine certainly seemed to be lagging behind the advances the
Federation had made.
Since Catherine's initial inspection of Rich's arm, the cybernetic implant
had been damaged several times. Each successive injury to the pilot's arm
had only served to heighten Doctor Ledoux's resolve to someday replace that
arm.
And there was no way Catherine was going to trust the surgery to anyone but
herself.

An hour later, Catherine was still busy reading. Reaching back with her
left hand, the vet massaged her neck; reading, it seemed, was not
necessarily a relaxing pass-time. Nevertheless, Catherine was delighted
with the research she had been carefully perusing.
A part of Catherine's mind realized that what she was doing might be
construed as 'work', and, since she was on vacation, she wasn't supposed to
*do* any 'work'. Well, as long as she stayed away from anything that was
currently being investigated in sickbay, the vet felt that she was safe.
As she finished reading one article and began calling up the next,
Catherine's thoughts suddenly travelled along a totally different path.
Turning away from her monitor, Catherine began wondering about Anne.
Hopefully, she and Anne were still friends, but after the previous night's
'misadventure', Catherine wasn't willing to be on anything. Anne certainly
needed a friend, and Catherine needed one just as much.
Shaking her head, a few golden curls tumbling loose, a frown crossed
Catherine's face. Anne had suffered through so much. Shuddering, the vet
was still outraged that her friend (for she was still thinking of Anne as
her friend) had been violated in such a heinous fashion. Catherine
grimaced again.
Sighing, the vet pushed a curl out of her face. Wishing that she could do
something for Anne, wishing that she could somehow help her, Catherine
didn't know what she could do. She didn't even know where to begin. Could
their friendship be salvaged? Catherine hoped so.
Unfortunately, the vet didn't think she would have the courage to approach
Anne herself. On the other hand, she wasn't certain that Anne would seek
her out either. What to do?
Turning off her viewer, Catherine rose from her seat. The thoughts
travelling through her mind needed to be contemplated in a different venue.
Respectfully submitted,
